A great day out from Rosella Luxury Holiday Cottage

Rievaulx Abbey is one of those places where the ruins are impressive enough - but from the air you suddenly understand just how enormous the monastery really was.

Founded in 1132, it was the first Cistercian abbey in the north of England and became one of the most important monastic houses in Britain. Under its most famous abbot, Aelred, the community grew to around 140 monks and 500 lay brothers - hundreds of men living, praying and working in this secluded valley.

Then came the Dissolution. Rievaulx was closed in 1538, by which point only 23 monks remained, and the buildings were systematically stripped of their roofs, bells, lead and anything else worth taking.

What’s left is still extraordinary. The great church, cloisters and domestic ranges sit almost like a stone skeleton in the valley, and this view really shows the scale of the whole complex rather than just the famous surviving walls.
