A photo of Fishers Hotel, Pitlochry, in 1868 by Magnus Jackson with a croquet game in progress on the lawns. The hotel was built about 1839 in the centre of the town - an advantageous position when the railway station was built close by in 1863. The coming of the railway made Pitlochry a popular destination for tourists. The hotel's gardens were once celebrated as "the finest Hotel Garden in Europe". The Autumn 1898 edition of Sportsman's, Tourist's, and General Time-Tables and Guide to the Rivers, Lochs, Moors, and Deer-Forests of Scotland reviewed the hotel, stating "The Public Rooms are large and handsome. The Private Sitting Rooms and Bedrooms are elegantly furnished and overlook the Flower Garden, which is allowed by all Visitors to be the finest attached to any establishment of the kind." This image is one of a collection of negatives produced by the Perth photographer, Magnus Jackson, between 1850 and 1890.
