We were recently sent this photograph of The Granary from the 1980s, and the bait digger working in the Old Harbour at the forefront of the photo caught our eye. 🎣

❓Can anyone perhaps identify the gentleman?

By coincidence, our Heritage Curator, Sarah, had also taken a snap of a bait digger in the Old Harbour in August this year.

Isn’t it great to see how some local traditions and practices continue across the decades? A wee glimpse of Portsoy harbour life, then and now. 🌊🐟

The dark nights here on the Moray Firth coast mean we look to the skies in hope that the Northern Lights decide to put on a show. 🌌✨

They have already made an appearance this season, so if you've always dreamed of catching a glimpse, now is the time to book a winter break in Portsoy.

Wrap up warm and head outside with your eyes to the skies. Even if the Northern Lights don't show, you'll be amazed at the array of stars that shine high above us. ⭐️🌙

Afterwards, retreat back to the warmth of your cosy Portsoy Marble Holiday Cottage and settle in for a snug night behind the yellow door. 🔥☕️

We really hope you're lucky and are treated to an unforgettable aurora overhead, but regardless, we can assure you of a magical stay by the coast.🤞✨

The shop will reopen tomorrow, Monday 26th October at 11am.

📷 Capturing a Legacy: One hour… One photograph…

Calling all photographers… 📷 An opportunity to capture a unique heritage story in Portsoy!

The Portsoy Marbles Creative Hub project aims to convert the unused historic buildings located around Portsoy’s Old Harbour into sustainable use as a Creative Hub, providing artists’ studios, workshops and creative engagement. 🎨🛠️

The buildings belonged to local businessman Tom Burnett-Stuart, who sadly passed away in January 2020. In a remarkable act of generosity and care for the people of Portsoy, Tom left the buildings in his will to be conserved and revitalised by the North East Scotland Preservation Trust (NESPT).

The Marble Workshop was Tom’s workspace and the building encapsulates his passion and commitment to the heritage of the Portsoy Marble industry. 🪨⚒️

Before we begin the project to revitalise the building, we want to visually document this special place and capture the essence of Tom’s legacy. 📸

We invite photographers to spend an hour in the workshop to capture an image that you feel reflects the spirit of Tom’s workshop. Together, the images will contribute to our heritage archive and form part of a future exhibition for the new space. 🖼️

🏆 We will also select one winning image, with the photographer receiving a year’s subscription to Outdoor Photography, the UK’s premier magazine for photographers who are passionate about wild places, inspiring nature and adventure.

You will have access to the space for one hour.

Please be aware that access is very tight. For Health & Safety reasons, main power is unavailable, but existing overhead lighting can be switched on. 💡

A battery-operated flash unit may be useful, but there is limited space for additional stands.
