Happy bees, delicious honey.

My interest in Beekeeping started back in the autumn of 2016 when I got speaking to a local beekeeper manning a honey stall at Potton's farmers market. In February 2017 I began a six week beekeeping course with the Bedfordshire Beekeepers Association. I then spent the rest of the spring, summer and early autumn going along to the associations training apiary and learning the art of beekeeping. It

wasn’t until May 2018 when I finally got my first nuc of honey bees myself. By this time I felt I had a little knowledge but realised that there was still a lot learn. My journey from now on involved reading bee books, a lot of trial and error and phone calls to some really helpful people in the association. Once I had my bees, within the first month sadly I lost my queen bee. This was devastating as the bees needed a queen to survive. After calling for help and advise from members of the association I manage to raise a new queen, helping my hive to eventually flourish and survive through the winter of 2018/2019. The new season is now upon us and I hope my bees will produce some beelicious local honey and multiply successfully to give me a second hive to nurture. May 2020
I am now well into the 2020 beekeeping season. This is my second year of beekeeping. Following the winter period I started the season with a couple of strong beehives in my apiary between Potton and Gamlingay and a small nuc of bees that a captured as a swarm the previous August from a back garden in Potton. With the aim to expand my beekeeping I managed to secure a second apiary site just outside of Everton, Bedfordshire. I now have four colonies, two close to Potton and two in the Everton apiary. Incidentally the two Everton colonies were made up from the swarm I captured from Potton the year before so the bees are very local. This year so far has been very successful for honey production. To date I have harvested approximately 50lbs of honey. I but this success down to the fields of Oil Seed Rape crops between Potton and Gamlingay. I am now hoping that the rest of the year will continue to be as fruitful so i can continue to provide local honey to the local area.

Un🐝lievable changes for honey, jams, and fruit juices.

Starting today, improved labelling standards kick in across Europe to improve your breakfast table:

🍯 No more vague ‘blend of EU and non-EU countries’ labels. Brands must now list every single country of origin in decreasing order of ingredient weight.

🧃 Operators will be allowed to use the label ‘fruit juices contain only naturally occurring sugars’ or carry a ‘reduced sugar’ claim if those natural sugars are cut by at least 30%.

🍓 The minimum fruit content in jams increases to 450g/kg for standard and 500g/kg for extra jams, compared to 350g/kg previously.

It’s a major win for transparency, because Europeans deserve to know what’s really on their table.

🌞 Summer is finally here, and with it, the beautiful hum of our local honeybees! 🐝

I managed to snap this photo of them hard at work, visiting the delicate white blossoms on the bramble bushes in Pegnut wood near Potton.

It's amazing to think that right now, they're starting to collect the first nectar for this year's batch of delicious, local Summer honey. 🍯

Every flower they visit is a little promise of summer's sweetness to come.

Let's take a moment to appreciate these incredible little pollinators!
