Trail Overview:
Distance: Approximately 5.9 km (3.7 miles).
Time: 2 to 2.5 hours at a steady pace.
Difficulty: Moderate.
The paths near the falls are well-surfaced but have many stone steps. The climb to the summit is short but steep, and the descent can get very boggy.
Starting Point: The main National Trust Aira Force Car Park off the A592.

Highlights of the hike
Aira Force: A dramatic, thunderous waterfall dropping through a narrow limestone gorge. Stone bridges at the top and bottom offer perfect viewing platforms.

The Woodland: Landscaped by the Howard family in the 18th century, the trail weaves past towering Douglas firs and specimen conifers. Look out for rare red squirrels.

Gowbarrow Fell: After passing the upper cascades, you leave the trees for open fellside. The trig point summit rewards you with a full curve view of Ullswater and the eastern fells.

Wordsworth Connection: This atmospheric landscape directly inspired William Wordsworth’s poem The Somnambulist.

These four distinct attractions near Penrith offer a mix of local history, medieval ruins, ancient prehistoric earthworks, and modern cultural experiences.

1. Penrith and Eden Museum
Housed in a 17th-century former girls' school building on Middlegate, the Penrith and Eden Museum showcases the social and archaeological history of the local area. Visitors can view regional fossils, Roman artifacts, and fine art collections.

2. Rheged Centre
Set into the hillside just west of town, the Rheged Centre is a large grass-roofed cultural hub. It features an independent cinema, art galleries, independent shops, and a popular family café.

3. Penrith Castle
Located right across from the railway station, the red-stone ruins of Penrith Castle date back to the late 14th century. The site was once a residence for Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later Richard III), and sits next to a pleasant public park.

🍹We have 2 large hot tubs that can fit 6 people each. There's a large seating area and a barbecue area outside, perfect for dining al fresco.

🍽️Our dining table can seat 20+ people and is right next to the kitchen.

🌿Our guests can enjoy nature in peace on our 15 acres of private grounds.
