ON PARK LANE IN LONDON, THERE'S A MEMORIAL TO WAR ANIMALS. WALK AROUND THE BACK, AND IT SAYS FOUR WORDS THAT STOP EVERYONE IN THEIR TRACKS.
Unveiled in 2004, the Animals in War Memorial stands in central London.
On one side — bronze horses, mules and a dog, loaded with the packs and supplies they carried through two world wars.
On the other side — an empty wall.
And carved into the stone, four words:
"They had no choice."
No rank. No names. No battles listed.
Just those four words — and the quiet understanding that every animal sent to war was carried there by humans, not by its own decision.
Millions of animals. One honest sentence.
Lest we forget.
