Rye has its ghost walks. Camber has Thomas Monk.

Local folklore tells of a Winchelsea fiddler and smuggler named Thomas Monk, said to have been shot by the King’s men during an affray on the Camber dunes in the 1830s.

And, according to the story, he never entirely left.

His ghost is said to wander the dunes when the light fades and the sea mist begins to creep in from Rye Bay.

History, folklore or a story improved with every retelling?

You can decide.

But on a dark October evening, with the marram grass moving in the wind and nobody else around, Camber can make quite a convincing case for itself.
Rye’s ghost walks run through the autumn too, so if you prefer your hauntings with a guide and a lantern, you don’t have far to go.

There's something lovely about the low autumn sun at this time of year.

Just look at that golden evening light streaming into the living room at Mariners Moon.

The perfect place to put your feet up after a long walk along Camber Sands.

Autumn by the sea. We rather like it.

A slightly odd Camber fact: the sea is usually warmer in October than it is in June.

The water hangs onto the summer's heat long after the air starts cooling down.
We're not suggesting anyone mistake Rye Bay for the Mediterranean, but it is one of the reasons early autumn by the sea can feel surprisingly good.

Add a quieter beach and considerably fewer windbreaks and October begins to make a strong case for itself.

One of our favourite autumn mornings starts in Camber and ends in Rye.

From White Sand, we walk through the village and pick up the traffic-free path across the marsh towards town.

It’s about three miles and a little over an hour on foot. On a good autumn morning there are birds everywhere, sheep for company, mist sitting low over the fields and those enormous Romney Marsh skies.

Then Rye for brunch.

And if enthusiasm for walking back mysteriously disappears, there’s a bus.

There’s autumn at Camber. And then there’s autumn at Jury’s Gap.

At the quieter eastern end of Camber Sands, our three old Coastguard Cottages and The Surf Shack sit between open countryside and the sea.

This is the wilder side of Camber. Big skies, sea air, sheep in the fields behind you and the beach just steps away.

When the weather turns, the old Coastguards really come into their own. Coastguards Lookout, Coastguards Lantern and Coastguards Beach House all have log burners, sea views and over 150 years of history in their walls. The Surf Shack gives two people a smaller hideaway in the same wonderfully exposed spot, with its own log burner for the walk back from the beach.

It isn’t polished seaside resort territory. Jury’s Gap can be windy, remote and wonderfully atmospheric.

Which is rather the point.

If the fire is part of the reason you’re booking an autumn cottage, these are the five to know.

Ocean Beach
Coastguards Beach House
Coastguards Lantern
Coastguards Lookout
The Surf Shack

All five have a real log burner, and from October to March we leave a starter basket of logs ready for your arrival.

Beach first.

Fire afterwards.

Dougal has tested this arrangement fairly extensively.

Log burner lit by 4pm, or hold out until it's properly dark?

Bonfire season is here. Northiam is first up, tomorrow night (Saturday 3 October): procession from 7.30pm, bonfire at about 8.30, fireworks after.

If you're staying with us this month, Hastings follows on 17 October, and our guide has the rest of the season: https://buff.ly/ZTa5Jt1

Have you been to a Sussex bonfire procession, or would this be your first?

Good news if you walk a dog at Camber Sands: the summer dog zones are gone from today until May.

That means the whole beach, end to end, and in autumn it's much quieter too.

Where does your dog head first when you get to the sand?
