I feel lucky to drive this road several times per week. The Forest of Dean really does show off in the autumn.

Another great photo from James Kelly-Smith Photography

Where is your favourite place for an autumnal drive? 🍂🚗

This was a drone photo of one of my favourite roads to drive in the Forest of Dean. Mix it with a golden sunrise and autumnal colours is just the chef's kiss 😘👌

Taken last year, this is the road between Parkend and Coalway, a road carved out through a valley with a lot of mining history to it.

Are there any other drives worth doing in Autumn?

How about taking some time to retreat during your stay at “The Retreat at Greenfields”?

Taking time to step away from the noise of daily life isn't just a luxury—it is essential for our well-being. True "retreating" means giving ourselves permission to disconnect from responsibilities, slow down our pace, and quiet our mind. By intentionally pausing, we allow our nervous system to rest, our creativity to spark, and our energy to recharge. The Retreat at Greenfields is designed to be a sanctuary for exactly this purpose. We invite you to use part of your stay to embrace the art of doing nothing, or doing only what brings you peace.

You can book yourself a stay here during low season (Oct to March) by contacting us direct for low season. It’s hard not to walk around the Forest without being drawn to take a photo. Forest fungi, flora and fauna, views and wildlife. What will you capture during your next visit?

Another lovely walk.

🏰 A CASTLE, THE RIVER WYE & 6 MILES OF BEAUTIFUL COUNTRYSIDE…

Now this is our kind of walk.

Starting beneath the impressive Goodrich Castle, this 6.3-mile circular climbs into the Wye Valley before winding through woodland and eventually joining the River Wye for a long, beautiful riverside walk back.

🥾 6.3 miles / 10.1 km
⏱️ Allow 3½–4½ hours
📍 Starts & finishes: Goodrich Castle car park, HR9 6HY
🏰 Bonus: Leave enough time to explore the castle afterwards — or finish with something to eat in the village.

It’s one of those walks that feels like a proper day out rather than simply a hike.

We’ve mapped the full circular route, including the walking line and stages, so you can see exactly where you’re going.

👇 Full route & interactive walking map in the comments.

Would you do this one? SAVE it for a Wye Valley day out. ❤️

How about this for a lovely August Sunday afternoon?
It's just a 10 minute drive down the road and not far from Chepstow castle.

Have you ever walked the whole way around Llandegfedd Lake?

There's a great 6 mile circular route which offers fantastic views over the lake, plus a wide range or terrain from woodlands to meadows, hills to stream crossings. You'll cross two counties (Monmouthshire and Torfaen) and have a great chance to see the flora and fauna that surrounds and inhabits the lake.

If 6 miles is a bit daunting, there's also a family friendly 1 mile walk exploring the woodland by the visitor centre, a gentle 1.5 mile walk through the nearby village of Coed-y-paen (with the Carpenters Arms pub at half way!), or a relaxing 4 mile walk alongside the more gentle eastern bank of the lake.

Please note the full Llandegfedd Lake walk and the 4 mile 'up and back' walk are only open March - September to protect the overwintering bird population.

At the end of your walk you can then relax at the lakeside cafe. Or enjoy the lake you've been walking around with watersports and open water swimming (pre-booking required).

Thanks to for this photo taken in the last sunny spell. More sun is coming from this weekend!
