The Codford army badge is a gigantic chalk carving of the Australian Army "Rising Sun" cap badge on the hillside of Lamb Down (locally known as "Misery Hill") near Codford, Wiltshire.Key FactsCreation: Carved between 1916 and 1917 during World War I.Creators: Troops from the 13th Training Battalion, Australian Imperial Force (AIF), stationed at nearby military camps.Size: Approximately 53 by 45 meters (175 by 150 feet).Design: Originally embedded with green, brown, and clear glass beer bottles to simulate a bronze finish against the white chalk.Name Origin: Soldiers assigned to maintain the badge as a form of punishment nicknamed the site "Misery Hill".Historical ContextWWI Camps: Codford and the surrounding Wylye Valley hosted vast training and transfer camps for tens of thousands of Australian and New Zealand (Anzac) troops before deployment to the Western Front.Convalescent Depot: In 1916, Codford also served as a depot for soldiers evacuated from front lines who were recovering from injuries.Remembrance: A nearby Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery holds the graves of 97 Anzac soldiers, and villagers hold an annual Anzac Day dawn service on April 25.
