Hidden between Grosmont Level Crossing and the tunnel lies Bridge 42. The original horse-drawn Whitby and Pickering Railway bridge at that location dates from 1836, but the current Grade II listed structure that we are appealing for funds for is thought to have been completed around 1845 to 1846, as part of the York and North Midland Railway's rebuilding of the line. 🛤️

Today, the Grade II listed bridge is the busiest on the NYMR, carrying every locomotive in and out of Grosmont depot - that's nearly 10,000 movements every year. After almost two centuries, urgent structural repairs are now essential.

To carry out the complex work, trains will be unable to run over the bridge while repairs take place which makes the Bridge 42 Appeal important and time-sensitive. 🛠️

Each and every donation will directly support specialist repairs, helping to preserve this historic structure and safeguard the future of the NYMR.

If you can, please donate here www.nymr.co.uk/bridge42.

In the historic seafaring village of Staithes, the colour blue is woven into the very fabric of the community's maritime identity.

🧶 The Traditional Blue Smock Jacket
Fishermen here traditionally wore knitted jumpers known as smock jackets, rather than using the term "gansey" common in other ports. These garments were typically dyed navy blue using natural indigo, which provided a durable finish capable of hiding stains and resisting the harsh effects of sea salt. This style was heavily influenced by the 19th-century British Navy, establishing a practical, warm uniform that remains a symbol of the town's heritage today.

âš“ The "Blue Eyed Lass"
The colour was also associated with the village’s history of "fair trade" and smuggling. One of the most notorious vessels in this illicit industry was the "Blue Eyed Lass", which was famously known for evading detection by concealing to***co beneath heavy loads of coal.

â›… Breeches in the Sky
Locals often relied on traditional weather lore to predict a break in the North Sea storms. A common saying in Hinderwell held that if there was enough blue sky visible in the morning to "make a pair of breeches," the weather would eventually clear up for the day.

The question we get asked more than any other by people wanting to book our cottages is....which one did Bob Mortimer stay in and which was Paul Whitehouse's?

They're referring to when they stayed with us and filmed their Christmas special episode of the BBC's Gone Fishing? We hadn't realised there are so many fans out there.

Answer: Bob was in Fisherman's Cottage, and Paul was in Old Jack's.

Fabulous memories, really fun guests, careful film crew, chatting and spending time in the pub with locals. Great show which has introduced so many people to the wonders of Staithes.
