Interesting facts from Scarborough’s past

📍 SCARBOROUGH AQUARIUM, SCARBOROUGH
📅 12 APRIL 1898

🐠 This remarkable photograph shows a view looking through one of the arched passageways inside Scarborough Aquarium in 1898.

🏛️ Opened in 1877, the aquarium was designed by architect Eugenius Birch and featured an eye-catching blend of Hindu temple influences and Moorish architecture, making it one of Scarborough's most distinctive Victorian attractions.

🌊 Despite its striking design, the aquarium struggled financially and never achieved the success its creators had hoped for. In 1925, the building found a new lease of life when it was transformed into an underground entertainment complex known as Gala Land.

🎭 After decades of entertaining visitors in different forms, the historic building was eventually demolished in 1966.

⏳ This fascinating image offers a glimpse inside a lost piece of Scarborough's history that disappeared nearly 60 years ago.
