A very difficult weekend at The Weston Hotel
Yesterday afternoon, as the storm passed through Scarborough, we experienced devastating flooding at The Weston Hotel. Our entire basement was submerged, our boilers failed and our electricity tripped out.
The fire brigade were with us for over eight hours, working incredibly hard to clear the road, our entrance and the basement. We cannot thank them enough for their efforts.
We wanted to share these videos to show what happened, but also to share our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has rallied around us during what has been an incredibly difficult 24 hours.
We are absolutely devastated by the damage caused. Today, our team have been working tirelessly to clean and recover the hotel, including the deep cleaning and decontamination needed throughout the basement and ground floor. Sadly, we have had to make the very difficult decision to close the hotel this weekend, including Cecil’s Restaurant and our Sunday lunch service tomorrow. Until everything has been properly cleaned, made safe and restored, we simply cannot offer our guests the experience they deserve.
We know this will cause huge disappointment and inconvenience to everyone booked in to stay or dine with us today and tomorrow, and we are truly, truly sorry. We hate letting people down, particularly those who have been looking forward to a break away or a lovely Sunday lunch. Please know this decision has not been taken lightly. We need to get everything properly sorted before we can reopen, and we are doing everything we can to make that happen.
But amongst all the devastation, one thing has shone through: the incredible people around us 💙
We are beyond proud of our team. Everyone has pulled together without hesitation, mucking in wherever needed, including those who have come in on their days off to help with the clean-up. Some were wading through floodwater last night, others were working hard to reassure guests and keep things running in incredibly difficult circumstances, all while dealing with the shock of what was happening.
To every single member of our team, thank you. Your hard work, kindness and willingness to do whatever it takes mean more to us than we can possibly say.
And to our guests who were here when it happened, thank you for being so unbelievably kind, understanding and helpful. We are so sorry that your time with us was disrupted by something so unexpected and upsetting. Your compassion towards us and our team meant the world.
And looking at the glorious sunshine this morning, you would never believe what we were faced with just hours earlier. The Yorkshire coast certainly keeps us on our toes! 🌦️
To everyone affected by our closure this weekend, we are genuinely sorry. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work hard to get everything back to how it should be.
And to our wonderful team, our guests, the fire brigade and everyone who has reached out with support: thank you, from the bottom of our hearts 💙
With love,
The Weston Hotel x
