Start with a freshly prepared breakfast at The Q Hotel (local island ingredients, no rush) and let our reception team point you towards one of the island's quirkiest indoor adventures: the Shipwreck Centre & Maritime Museum at Arreton Barns, a short drive from Shanklin. Check current opening arrangements before you set off.

⚓ What you'll find: the UK's largest collection of shipwreck artefacts, brought together by diver Martin Woodward, who began the collection in 1978. Think Spanish gold coins, wartime submarine relics, historic diving helmets and centuries of stories pulled from the seabed. The museum is now cared for by the Maritime Archaeology Trust and is entirely indoors. Perfect as the evenings draw in.

🏴‍☠️ While you're there: Arreton Barns is an island arts and crafts centre with craft workshops, a 12th-century church and plenty of atmosphere. There are family-friendly pirate trails and treasure hunts for younger explorers, too.

A church so small it once seated barely a congregation, tucked between trees just down the coast from Shanklin. 🕯️

Your morning begins the unhurried way at The Q Hotel, with a freshly prepared breakfast built on local island ingredients, and our team on reception happy to point you towards the quieter corners of the island that most visitors drive straight past.

The Old Church of St Lawrence sits in its churchyard above the undercliff at Ventnor, and it has been there since the late twelfth century. It began life as a manorial chapel measuring roughly twenty feet by ten, and for years it was described as the smallest parish church in England, until a chancel was added in 1842. Grade II* listed and carefully restored in the 1920s, it is the kind of place where the stonework, the low doorway and the silence do more talking than any guidebook. Do check the current opening times and any service arrangements before you set out, as these can vary.

The gardens are open daily and free to wander.

🌿 Discover winding paths, mature trees and lawns touched with late-October gold. These were once the private pleasure grounds of Rylstone House, a Victorian cottage orné laid out in the 1860s, before becoming a public garden. The bandstand has welcomed summer concerts for generations, while a Grade II listed Swiss-style chalet, built around 1880, once served teas on its veranda as the band played outside. Discover a heritage that began in Granny Norah Boswell’s kitchen garden in 1972. After a hot summer in 1976, her son Colin began experimenting with commercial garlic growing. Today, the farm is run by the second and third generations of the Boswell family, with a farm shop, garlic-inspired restaurant and free farm walks. It’s open year-round except Christmas Day and Boxing Day; check current arrangements before you visit.

Discover Bembridge Windmill, the Isle of Wight’s last surviving windmill. Built around 1700, it milled corn until 1913 and was painted by J.M.W. Turner in 1795; a copy of his painting is on display. Now cared for by the National Trust, this little piece of living island heritage is well worth a visit. Check current National Trust opening arrangements before you go, as opening is seasonal.
