🌿 Walk of the Week – Week Three: The Skirrid Circular 🌿
Every Monday in June we’re spotlighting one of our favourite local walks — perfect for guests staying at Three Castles Caravan Park who want to explore the stunning landscapes right on our doorstep.
This week’s route is a real standout: dramatic, atmospheric, and one of the most iconic hills in Monmouthshire.
👣 Week Three: The Skirrid Circular
The Skirrid (also known as Ysgyryd Fawr) is a striking, ridge‑backed hill steeped in myth and legend — and the circular walk around it is as rewarding as it is memorable.
This 7.1km loop begins with a gentle woodland approach before climbing steadily onto the ridge. Once you reach the top, you’re treated to incredible panoramic views across the Black Mountains, Sugar Loaf, the Brecon Beacons, and deep into Herefordshire. The summit ridge is long, narrow, and wonderfully dramatic — perfect for photos and a well‑earned breather.
The descent takes you back through peaceful forest paths and open countryside, completing a route that offers a bit of everything: atmosphere, variety, and some of the best views in the region.
✨ What to expect:
🌄 A rewarding climb with spectacular ridge‑top views
🌲 Beautiful woodland trails and open hillside
🏞️ A dramatic summit with far‑reaching panoramas
🐕 Dogs welcome but leads needed in livestock areas
🪜 A few steep sections and uneven terrain
🌧️ Can be muddy after rain — sturdy footwear recommended
🕒 Around 2–3 hours to complete
Walkers often describe The Skirrid as magical — a hill with real presence. Whether it’s the sweeping views, the peaceful woodland, or the sense of history in the landscape, it’s a route that stays with you long after you’ve finished.
