As many of you know, we do love our walks in the Yorkshire Dales, and Swaledale has to be one of our favourite places to explore.
One of the things we love most about Westholme is being able to step out of the front door and straight onto some incredible walking routes.
This circular walk over Kisdon is one of our absolute favourites and, at around 4 miles, packs in some of the most spectacular views in the Yorkshire Dales.
Setting off from Westholme in the pretty hamlet of Thwaite, the route winds through traditional Swaledale farmland, past the iconic stone barns the dale is famous for, before climbing steadily up the western slopes of Kisdon.
As you gain height, the views just keep getting better. Wild Boar Fell and Nine Standards Rigg can be seen in the distance, and after reaching the summit wall and heading towards Kisdon’s southern edge, you’re rewarded with a truly breathtaking panorama.
Looking down over Thwaite, with Buttertubs Pass and Great Shunner Fell beyond, it’s one of those views that makes you stop in your tracks and simply take it all in. The wind was certainly making its presence known on our visit, but it didn’t stop us finding a spot to enjoy our sandwiches while admiring the scenery!
The descent offers equally stunning views across Muker, the famous Muker Meadows and the length of Swaledale before returning to Thwaite. And, of course, no walk is complete without a well-earned coffee at Kearton’s Tea Room ☕️
A challenging but hugely rewarding walk, with a few steep sections to get the heart pumping, but views that make every step worthwhile.
Have you ever climbed Kisdon?
