You might not expect an old red telephone box to make it onto the holiday itinerary, but Kishorn has found a much better use for theirs!

The Kishorn Selfie Box has been turned into a little photo stop and book exchange, so you can pop in for a picture while you’re exploring the village and have a look through the books while you’re there. If you share your selfie on Facebook or Instagram and tag them, you can also join their gallery of people who have stopped by on their travels.

It’s very close to Onnela Lodge, so go and find it while you’re staying in Kishorn and add your photo to the collection.

We haven't talked about our very local neighbour for a little while, and if you're staying at Onnela Lodge, it would be a shame not to know it's there.

Kishorn Seafood Bar specialises in local shellfish, so you'll find produce such as langoustines and scallops on the menu rather than food that's travelled halfway across the country before reaching your plate. It's close to the lodge too, which means you can go out for seafood without turning dinner into another big journey!

Inverewe is a fun one to read about before you visit because the plants growing there really shouldn't make much sense this far north.

The garden was started in the 1860s and its sheltered position, combined with the effects of the North Atlantic Drift, has allowed plants from around the world to grow near Poolewe.

It makes a change from the mountains and coastal activities that usually fill a Highland itinerary, and there's plenty to look at even if nobody in your group would describe themselves as a gardener.

Here's something completely different to put in the holiday itinerary... spending some time with birds of prey at Shieldaig Lodge Falconry near Gairloch.

Experiences are pre-booked and give you the chance to get much closer to owls, hawks, buzzards, falcons and eagles while learning about the birds from the falconers who work with them. They also offer archery, so it's worth having a look at what's available if you're heading towards Gairloch for the day.

You do need to arrange your visit beforehand rather than simply turning up.

If you're staying in Kishorn and heading across to Applecross, Bealach na Bà is going to make the drive considerably more interesting.

The historic single-track road climbs to more than 600 metres and includes some very tight hairpin bends, so this isn't a road to tackle in a hurry. Check the weather before setting off, take your time and use the passing places properly, particularly if you're visiting when the roads are busier.

Once you've made it across, you can carry on into Applecross and make a full day of exploring the peninsula.

If you’re looking at a Highland road trip and thinking you’ll need to pack your bags every morning, you might not.

Stay at Onnela Lodge in Kishorn and use it as home for the trip instead. Applecross, Torridon, Shieldaig, Lochcarron and plenty of other places are close enough for days out, so you can explore a different area and still come back to the same bed that night.

If Applecross is on your plans, you may as well give yourself time for lunch while you’re there because the Applecross Inn has been feeding locals and visitors for years.

Seafood features heavily on the menu, which makes sense when you look at where you are, and you can have your meal looking across Applecross Bay towards the Inner Sound. It’s a good addition to an Applecross day rather than treating the village as somewhere to drive through before heading back.

Attadale Gardens is very close to Onnela Lodge, so this is an easy one to add to your plans without losing half the day travelling there.

There are 20 acres to explore, including the Japanese Garden and water gardens, with sculptures dotted around as you walk. Children up to 15 can visit for free, dogs are welcome on short leads, and there’s a DIY café when you’re ready for a break.

They’re open daily during the season from 10am until 5pm, so have a look before your stay and pick a day to visit.
