Dr Fraser Darling, the farmer and environmentalist, lived at the Kilcamb Lodge during the nineteen forties and fifties. In 1944 he was appointed by the UK government as Director of the West Highland Survey. This ‘Essay in Human Ecology’ set out to investigate the challenges faced by crofting communities of the west Highlands, in particular the problems of depopulation and economic decline caused by decades of what was seen at the time as mismanagement. The goal was to create a scientific study that would subsequently inform future agricultural and social policy for the region.

The final report was largely written at the Kilcamb and was critical of the Department of Agriculture; as a result, it was effectively suppressed until finally being published in 1955.

Copies of some of Darling’s books can be found in the library at the Kilcamb Lodge and, for those with an interest in agricultural history, make fascinating reading.

Guest to the Kilcamb Lodge will find lots of neat finishing touches both inside and outside the building. These include antiques, unusual decorations and intriguing ornaments and sculptures. Some items, such as this Royal Winton pottery wash and basin set, and the magnificent, sculpted eagle that stands in the grounds, were here when we took over the hotel some years ago. Others we brought with us from our travels.

Ultimately, it’s all about creating a calm, welcoming and homely atmosphere, where guests can relax in total comfort during their stay in this beautiful, romantic and historic part of the Scottish west coast.

The Kilcamb Lodge dates from the eighteenth century. Although it has been used for many things during its history – a military barracks, hunting lodge and grand Victorian family home – for the last 56 years it has been a hotel with a steadily growing reputation for excellence.

It’s often said that on the west coast of Scotland you can experience four seasons in one day. True or not, it’s certainly the case that we get an awful lot of varied weather which, of course, is one of the joys of visiting the area. It can also result in some fabulous rainbows, often with vivid colours and stretching into a full bow.

The effect is caused by the diffraction of sunlight passing through raindrops, creating a natural spectrum of light that is separated into seven primary colours: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet; most people remember these by the mnemonic ‘Richard of York gave battle in vain’, which recalls the defeat of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

Sad to say that we’ve not yet discovered the pot of gold that is supposed to be found at the spot where a rainbow touches the ground. So, instead we content ourselves by watching the beautiful sight of these optical phenomena as they grace the landscape around the Kilcamb Lodge.

Our sundial in the garden is more of a work of art than a timepiece…especially when the sun chooses to sneak behind the clouds! We’re not even sure how accurate it is, even when the sun is shining.

Sundials originated in ancient Egypt, where perhaps cloud cover was less of an issue. They were widely used by the Greeks and Romans, who turned them into practical timepieces as well as public monuments, and used them in the study of geometry and astronomy. Even with the advent of modern clocks and watches, sundials continued to be prized for their sculptural and aesthetic merits. Which brings us back to our sundial, which is a lovely addition to the garden, sitting on a naturally sculpted piece of granite from the local area and exuding a timeless sense of peace and antiquity.

Sitting in the grounds of the Kilcamb Lodge is an old rowing boat. This was originally owned by Arthur Ransome, the famous author of children’s stories such as Swallows and Amazons that was written in 1929. The boat is called Coch-y-bonddhu and was the model for the Scarab, which featured in Ransome’s book Picts and Martyrs.

Coch-y-bonddhu has had a chequered life. Built in 1934 and named after a type of fishing fly, the boat was used by Ransome and his family in Suffolk and then later on Coniston Water, before being sold in the mid 1950s to Arnside School in Lancashire. Sometime later, the boat was moved to Scotland, before being purchased in 1968 by the fiddler and historian Charlie MacFarland, who used her as a fishing boat on Loch Sunart. Years passed and the boat appears to have been abandoned in the grounds of the Kilcamb Lodge, where she was discovered by a member of the Arthur Ransome Society.

Following an appeal, the society funded her restoration, the work being carried out by John Hodgson, a local craftsman from Morvern. Coch-y-bonddhu was relaunched in 1995 and subsequently spent time on display at various museums in the Lake District. There is, however, something of a mystery as to how the boat returned to the grounds of the Kilcamb Lodge!
