Have you watched Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster? It’s a fascinating documentary about the discovery of one of the largest and best preserved pliosaur skulls ever found, in the cliffs above Kimmeridge Bay, near Swanage. Dr Steve Etches MBE, led a team which worked on the cliff face, hanging from ropes, to extract the pliosaur skull from the cliffs before they eroded.

We recommend a trip to The Etches Collection fossil museum in Kimmeridge village when you stay at Swanage Home from Home. Steve Etches, who has dedicated his life to discovering and preserving local fossils, founded the museum to display some of the 2800 fossils he discovered from the Jurassic period. Don’t miss a wander down to Kimmeridge beach, where you might see a fossil in situ!

The BBC are honouring Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday on 8th May by showing some of his programmes this week. You can catch up with Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster on iPlayer.

Why do we love Swanage Home from Home? ❤️

We are Ali and John and we’ve been coming on holiday to Swanage with our 3 children for nearly 20 years. Swanage is the perfect place for our family holidays with its safe beach and the best sand for building castles! We have lots of fun in Swanage and at the dozens of places to visit close by, like boat trips to Brownsea Island and catching the atmospheric steam train to Corfe Castle.

Now that our children are teenagers, Swanage Home from Home is still perfect for us - it’s close to everything so the boys can wander off into town at their leisure. I treasure us spending time together on the wonderful walks from the door of the apartment. Then when we get home, I love relaxing on the sun-drenched balcony with a glass of something nice! 🥂

The 3 bedroom apartment is spacious, so we all have room to spread out and chill. In the evenings, it’s just 2 minutes’ walk down the road (I’ve timed it!) to get great fish and chips at The Fish Plaice and eat them by the beach, followed by a drink or two at the friendly Swanage pubs.
