Explanation of the ‘Control’ cycle illustrated in the Dao yin video.
Order: Wood-Earth-Water-Fire-Metal. This order manifests how the elements regulate or control each other and each one prepares the body for the next.
TCM theory - Wood covers Earth; Earth absorbs Water; Water puts out Fire; Fire burns Metal; Metal cuts Wood and so on ad infinitum.
So the video begins with the Wood element (dynamic flexibility) bending and twisting side to side like a tree blowing in the breeze; this allows relaxed centering and maximises your relationship with gravity (Earth) which represents stability and grounding (expansion/contraction of the breath); moving on to Water element with fluidity and spinal wave mechanics; this then prepares us for the Fire element which is an energetic and rising energy. It provides resilience, anti-fragility and strength. Remember, you are only as strong as your weakest link so if you have excess flexibility but little core strength you are weak; if you are physically strong but inflexible you are fragile. This applies to mental weakness too. Fire energy provides the answer combining flexibility with strength also known as Mobility and the Water element flow prepares you for the Fire energy strength moves.
Finally, Metal cools and becomes rigid and still. This allows you to hold the stretch after your will has endured the furnace of Fire.
Now you understand how the 5 elements interact to produce a preparatory routine known as Dao yin which is believed to be the precursor of Qigong and Tai chi.
