From scrap to art, music, permaculture, events, inspiration, an Airbnb... and hope! All welcome Over the hills and far away, there lies a place called Rockaway Park. Here – on a stretch of land somewhere between Glastonbury, Bristol and Bath – the homes are handmade, space is abundant and art is king. “It’s like Disneyland meets Scrapheap Challenge,” JaK VICE

Nestled between Glastonbury, Bristol,

and Bath lies Rockaway Park, a unique haven where handmade homes, abundant space, and art thrive. Once a scrapyard, we're transforming daily into a vibrant community. We rent out space for creative endeavors, buy, sell, and rent eclectic items, and offer rooms in our quirky Airbnb house. Our on-site vegan café serves from 12-2 on weekdays, with self-service available anytime. It's perfect for catering, parties, or a casual visit with free entry by donation. We also provide a therapy suite, music rehearsal space, and are crafting a teaching area from reclaimed shipping containers. Join us for Sunday Sessions monthly, featuring vegan roasts, live music, and an alternative market. Explore our Chapel of Unrest for gigs, and visit studios for ethical screen printing, glass blowing, and more. Don't forget to check out the Rockaway shop for merch and our studios and supporters' wares. And mark your calendar for our annual Arts Weekend every September. We can work with you to provide space for your needs including weddings, birthdays, gigs, workshops and more. Stay tuned for updates, and feel free to reach out if you'd like to learn more!

Pop-Up Exhibition – Kaleidoscope Play Zine
Sunday 21st June, 3pm – 5pm in the Rockaway Park Classroom

We’ve recently had Michelle back here at Rockaway delivering a project she’s been working on with Dr Amanda Norman from the University of Wi******er, which offered free family drop-in creative workshops for a couple of hours on a Sunday for families with children under 3.

As a result of these workshops, they’ve created Kaleidoscope - a new play zine for parents featuring ideas for family play sessions, new original nursery rhymes based on wildlife, a poem to explore the Rockaway Community Forest Garden, plus a handy map of the garden and a colouring sheet! The map also features a QR code that takes you to fun facts about different wildlife, like bees, badgers, hedgehogs and ladybirds, and how your family can help them.

Amanda and Michelle will be in the Rockaway classroom this Sunday to launch the zine as part of a pop-up exhibition about the project, plus there are now free copies the zine for parents to download from Amanda’s website here - https://www.amandascalmscapes.co.uk/kaleidoscope-workshops

There’s also a version of the play zine for workshop facilitators and early years practitioners to help set up their own creative play sessions with additional info about a Person-Centred Approach and CRIB  (compassionate, respectful, intimate, becoming) of care!

So why not pop along to the exhibition and check it out!

Garden update from Marta, Penny and our brilliant volunteers…

First things first, we have spotted newts back in the pond. Turns out the snake didn’t eat them all after all.

The garden is absolutely bursting with life at the moment. The mix of rain and sunshine has everything growing like mad, and we’ve experienced plenty of both while out working.

The squash terraces are looking good, Zak has been disappearing into the undergrowth clearing around the young birches we planted last year, and Amelia and Anna have been busy weeding and freeing up the fruit trees.

The scythe has been back out too, clearing the bracken that was trying to take over and give the new trees and shrubs we planted over winter a bit more breathing space.

The autumn planted onions are ready to pick, the iceberg lettuce has done amazingly well, and swipe to the end for a picture of our very helpful garden cat (middle management) supervising all the hard work (or mostly sleeping).

A little snapshot of life in the Rockaway garden this week.

If you fancy getting your hands dirty, learning a bit, sharing your skills or just spending some time outdoors with a lovely bunch of people, get in touch. We’re always happy to welcome more volunteers into the garden, get in touch at [email protected]

STONE CARVING AT ROCKAWAY 🪨✋

Spend a day learning the traditional craft of stone carving with experienced craft mason Paul Maggs.

No experience needed, just come along, pick up the tools and have a go.

You’ll learn how to choose and transfer your design, use traditional carving techniques and slowly turn a piece of stone into something completely your own.

Paul will guide you through the whole process, whether you choose one of his designs or create your own.

A relaxed day of making, learning and getting covered in a bit of stone dust in true Rockaway style.

All tools, materials and PPE provided.

You’ll leave with your own hand-carved creation to take home.

What troubles me (a bit) is that 'Do It Yourself' became an aesthetic, a lifestyle. And from where I was standing back in the late 1970s, this wasn't what it meant at all. What was important about Buzzcocks releasing 'Spiral Scratch' without record company involvement wasn't just that spirit of independence but the idea that 'if something needs doing, do it'.
DIY originated as cut-and-paste lettering and tinny cassette recordings because that was the only way for a lot of people to make a fanzine or distribute music. And gradually that style became synonymous with the phrase 'do it yourself'.
Rockaway Park, an abandoned quarry-cum-artists' wonderland, is an incredible place, not least because it tells the story of people who just went about their business and did it. Rockaway is a beautiful place too, a place where amazing things happen (not least, the Chapel of Unrest, the 'congregation of agitation'). And what you see when you go there is ideas made solid through hard work and endeavour and determination. It's an inspiring place.
Commoners Choir will be hosting a Do It Yourself weekend there soon (see below) where there'll be all sorts of workshops, exhibitions and entertainment that exemplify the phrase and look at what it means in an age of big tech and AI.
