It was in 1510 when Edward Stafford, the third Duke of Buckingham, commissioned Thornbury Castle to be built. He was the only man to rival King Henry VIII’s wealth and status at that time, and so the castle was a display of his wealth and ambition that Henry did not take kindly to.
Having found Stafford guilty of treason, the king took control of the castle he so coveted. A brief, beloved retreat for Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Thornbury Castle has weathered the tumult of British history over the many centuries.
Today, it stands just as tall as it did in those days but has been restored with great care and precision with a multi-million pound renovation, bringing it back to the regal grandeur of its past.
