The only known Roman gold mine in Britain. ⛏️🥇

Dolaucothi near Pumsaint was worked with water channels seven miles long to wash the hillside. Mining restarted in the 1930s and failed. ⏳📜

The National Trust runs underground tours. 🕳️✨

Planning a break/holiday in Wales and considering somewhere away from the madding crowds, then here in West Wales is your destination or more specifically Discover Ceredigion.

The illustration below is something I put together for our guests to see what is in the local area and plan their trips, during their stay at our one bedroom self catering holiday let Apartment. As within an hours drive there are some great walks, beaches, castles, historic houses, gardens, steam railways and much more. Not forgetting adventure activities on the river Teifi, boat trips to see the dolphins out in Cardigan Bay, bike trails in the Brechfa forest.

We are Dog Friendly with extensive grounds and mown field paths by our river, including fire pit for evenings chilling out by the water. Offering guests the chance to chill out and relax in the quiet Ceredigion countryside, great for couples seeking to escape the mad world.

If you want the real feel of Wales then Ceredigion is the spot, as it remains true to its roots in culture and language.

Events over the winter at the National Wool Museum. Free to enter and open to everyone, making it a place to visit again and again over the winter. There’s always something new to explore, and endless opportunities to create memories with family, friends or enjoy on your own.

https://museum.wales/wool/whatson/13042/Winter-at-National-Wool-Museum/

Wool was once one of Wales’ most important industries. Located in historic Cambrian Mills, from where Welsh woollen blankets, stockings, shirts and shawls were sent around the world, the National Wool Museum offers engaging experiences and learning for all ages.

Find out how wool is processed from fleece to fabric on our self-guided trails, explore exhibitions on the history of cloth making and its use in fashion and try your hand at traditional skills such as carding and spinning before marvelling at the skills of our craftspersons in processing wool.

The beautiful Teifi Valley has been the beating heart of the woollen trade in Wales for over a hundred years. With several old machines still in working order there’s no better place to learn the story of nature’s great natural, renewable and biodegradable fibre.

Melin Teifi, adjacent to our museum still produces the finest traditional Welsh flannel, and our visitors are welcome to watch master craftsmen at work creating intricate patterns and wonderful fabrics on mechanised looms.

We have now signed up with Welsh Revenue Authority, as required by law for ALL accommodation providers in Wales, so not just self-catering like us, but Airbnb, Campsites, Hotels etc...

Basically from April 2027 any overnight accommodation that people book in Wales must be registered, if the place a member of the public books is not registered, then it is operating unlawfully and guests should consider what else is being 'overlooked'.

The next step will be 'Certification' but no set dates on that one yet though, which is good as that one will incur a 'fee' payable by me.

All this is part of the 'Visitor Levy' (aka Tourism Tax) which by the looks of it most Welsh councils are NOT going to implement, with only Cardiff signing up so far. Anglesey have said no, with Gwynedd and Conwy suspending any decision, other councils seem to be sitting on their hands at present.

A few days away can make a real difference.

At Maesyfelin Isaf, near Lampeter, you can enjoy your own self-catering apartment, spacious grounds and time beside the river, with your dog welcome too.

It is a lovely base for couples looking to explore Ceredigion, head towards Cardigan Bay, or simply enjoy a quieter break together. The apartment has its own front door, king-size bedroom, kitchen-diner and lounge, so you can settle in and make the stay your own.

After a day out, come back to the grounds, cross the wooden footbridge or spend the evening beside the fire pit.

If a Ceredigion break is on your mind for the next few months, check availability and book direct here:

If you prefer to book through Booking.com, I’ll add that link in the comments.

This is a quick note to everybody looking to book accommodation here in Wales in 2027/28 FY as ALL properties must be 'Registered'. This includes AirBnB so ensure what you book is legally registered.

As regards to the Visitor Levy (aka Tourist Tax), as of yet Ceredigion have not made a decision and as such is NOT DUE in this part of Wales. However, Cardiff is a different story as they have implemented it. Please note that it applies to everyone whether from Cardiff, Coventry or Copenhagen.

For now Ceredigion is free from this levy/tax.
