The Lesnes Abbey Page This is a page to publicise Lesnes Abbey and Lesnes Abbey Woods and the events that go on there.

Lesnes Abbey is a 88 hectare park with ruins of a 12th century abbey and 70 hectares of woodland. The site has recently been enhanced using Heritage Lottery Funding, and this page promotes the new opportunities and activities afforded by this funding. There is a new 'Lesnes Lodge' which features two new classrooms/activity rooms, public toilets and there will be a refreshment kiosk also, once an appropriate concessionaire has been appointed. There will be two full time members of staff onsite, running events, managing the woodland and developing a new educational program. All revenue generated by events and activities will feedback into the site to establish it's long term sustainability as a community asset for the area.

Yesterday saw the last of this years Lesnes Abbey Woods Bee Walks organised by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. However their work at Lesnes continues and they will be providing bee friendly plants to further enhance our meadows before the Bee Walks start again next spring. The Monks Garden continues to provide additional late season forage for bees and other wildlife as demonstrated by the parakeets we witnessed eating seeds from our Cardoons.

Lesnes Abbey Woods is a flagship site for the Bumblebee Conservation Trusts National Lottery Heritage Fund B.E.E. Project.

Lesnes Abbey Woods volunteers have been helping to save one of London's rarest plants.

Until recent planting Lesnes Abbey Woods was one of just two sites in London where Tower Mustard could be found growing wild.

Tower mustard has suffered steep decline in London but has been successfully grown and replanted.

Royal Forestry Society Excellence in Forestry Awards 2026

The FORESTED Project (Future-Oriented Regeneration of Ecological Spaces through Timber, Education and Design), based at Lesnes Abbey Woods, has claimed gold for the prestigious Education and Learning Award, sponsored by the Duchy of Cornwall and PEFC.

The successful project was led by our partners George Fereday, London Metropolitan University and Dr. Xan Browne, Royal Danish Academy, Copenhagen, and funded by the RCA's Ecological Citizen(s) Network+ / EPSRC.

Judges' comments included the following:

"The project shows clear evidence of first-hand learning in a woodland setting, with students and community participants engaging directly in forestry operations, ecological extraction, mobile sawmilling, greenwood working, joinery and furniture fabrication."

"The key strengths that make this submission exceptional are its depth of integration, its practical authenticity and its breadth of impact...The strongest impression is of a project that is ambitious but grounded, educationally rigorous but practical, and locally rooted while carrying significance for wider forestry, design and sustainability practice: 'a template for change'."
