Frequently Asked Questions about Quality Mountain Days. QMD FAQs.
* What’s a QMD?
A QMD is a Quality Mountain Day, which is what I aim to help you to have by accompanying you on mountain adventures like the ones featured on this page. It is also a standard unit of experience required by people preparing for training and assessment for qualification with the Mountain Training Association (UK).
* What happens on a QMD?
We travel to the start of our adventure (separately while in the post-COVID period), get our boots on and set out. I have already checked the weather forecast, agreed a suitable activity with you and advised you on what you need to bring. We could be walking up a peak in Kintail, scrambling along a section of the Main Ridge in the Cuillin or visiting a great corrie (bowl on the high slope of the mountain) in Torridon.
* Is it all hard work?
Climbing mountains inevitably involves some uphill travel, but you will have time to take rests at suitable places, eat lots of high-energy food that you have brought, enjoy the views and take photographs if you like. It’s supposed to be fun. It’s your day out, and I’ll be there to help you make the most of it.
* How far? How high?
That depends on your preferences. Most mountains can be climbed by starting from the roadside and climbing 900 to 1000 metres (that’s around 3000 feet) in 5 to 8 kilometres (3 to 5 miles). If you can climb at 10 metres a minute and walk at 4km an hour you are reasonably fit, and would not find this difficult, but slower speeds and rest periods obviously make the day longer. Taking in more mountains once we are up there makes good use of the effort in climbing from sea level. I would always be advised by you whether you wanted to do that. A standard QMD is at least 5 hours, but a longer one would need all day.
