Angus Sandstone paving and setts, shown across four projects.

The same product gives a different character depending on the setting. Finish, size and laying pattern all change how it reads, from a residential patio to a larger landscaping or public realm scheme.

It’s available sawn, light polish, polished or riven. Paving comes in widths of 200 to 500mm and setts in 100 to 200mm, in thicknesses of 40, 50 or 60mm, with other sizes produced on request. It is produced to BS EN 1341:2012 tolerances, and is hard-wearing and frost-resistant, with natural variation in colour and texture.

The stone is quarried, cut and finished at Pitairlie, so what’s specified is what’s delivered.

Historic Environment Scotland’s latest audit puts numbers on something our industry sees every day.

Scotland’s historic environment contributed £6.1 billion to the economy in 2024. £3.8 billion of that came from the repair and maintenance of traditional buildings and the supply chains behind that work, ahead of the £2.3 billion from heritage tourism.

Those supply chains start with the material. We quarry and process Angus Sandstone at Pitairlie Quarry, supplying walling, paving, copes and roofing for heritage and contemporary projects.

The audit also points to the need for ongoing investment, specialist skills and maintenance. Keeping a traceable supply of traditional stone available is part of that.

Every piece of Denfind stone, whether paving or walling, is processed by a person operating our machinery.

At Pitairlie Quarry, our processing team runs the saws and guillotines beside the quarry where the stone is extracted. Each piece is handled, checked and finished by someone who works with Angus Sandstone every day, so the finish reflects how the stone behaves rather than a fixed output.

That control matters when you're specifying. The stone comes from our own quarry, it's processed on the same site, and the people cutting it are accountable for what leaves the yard.

Another example of Angus Sandstone bringing character to a contemporary Edinburgh build. 100mm Guillotined stone was supplied to for this residential development, with landscaping carried out by .

It's a good demonstration of how a traditionally quarried, heritage material can sit naturally alongside modern architecture, adding texture and permanence without looking out of place on a new build.

A residential garden landscaping project at Ravelston D**e, Edinburgh, featuring a range of our Angus Sandstone products.

The project uses sawn paving for the pathway, setts, flat copes, and 40mm sawn walling stone, giving a consistent natural stone finish across the hard landscaping while working alongside the existing boundary wall and planting.

It's a good example of how several Angus Sandstone products can be specified together on a single project to tie different elements of a garden together.

Following on from last week's post on Historic Environment Scotland's audit of at-risk Angus flagstone roofs, here's a recent example of that heritage skill and material in practice.

Denfind Stone completed roof repairs at St Athernase Church in Leuchars, a historic listed building, using 20mm thick Carmyllie Stone Slates.

As the only source of Carmyllie stone slates in the world, and our stone is a direct match for the original material used on this and other historic buildings, allowing repairs to be carried out with the correct traditional roofing stone rather than a substitute.

The project was designed by Nicoll Russell Studios and built by G Brown Stonemasons.

As the audit made clear, the supply of authentic material is critical to keeping roofs like this standing. Denfind Stone remains committed to supporting that work.

Historic Environment Scotland's recent audit has confirmed what many in the industry already knew: Angus flagstone roofing is now a rare and at-risk feature, with fewer than 200 buildings in Angus known to retain it, out of only around 240 identified across Scotland.

Denfind Stone is the only supplier of genuine Angus flagstone roofing in the world, quarried and processed at Pitairlie. We have recently completed restoration work using Angus flagstone at Acheson House on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, Monimail Cemetery, and St Athernase Church in Leuchars, and have been approved to supply forthcoming restoration projects including the roof of the Great Hall at Edinburgh Castle and Abbot's House at Arbroath Abbey.

As this audit highlights, the specialist skills and material needed to maintain these roofs are becoming harder to source. Denfind Stone remains committed to keeping that supply, and the traditional knowledge behind it, available for the projects that need it.

Angus Sandstone continues to prove its versatility across both new build and renovation projects.

The client first specified 40mm guillotined walling stone with corners for their new self-build in Brechin, using it externally on the full-height gable.

The same guillotined stone was also used internally as cladding around their log burner, showing how the material carries through from exterior to interior application without losing consistency.

Pleased to see our Angus Sandstone featured on this new driving range facility for , on the Fife coast.

140mm sawn Angus Sandstone walling was specified for the build, giving the facility a natural stone finish that sits comfortably alongside timber cladding and standing-seam roofing.

It's a good example of how the same sandstone can be worked to suit a contemporary, functional building as easily as a traditional one.

The stone was supplied to Cartmore Building Supply as part of the build.
