When we went to Exmoor on Friday we stopped in Watchet and found this statue of The Ancient Mariner. It was erected in 2003 as a tribute to Samuel Taylor Coleridge who lived nearby and, when seeing the harbour during a walking tour in 1797, was inspired to write The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Every year I threaten to cut this rose down as it is so big and is overgrowing the paths. I pruned it hard in the Spring but you wouldn't think so to look at it. I really can't bear to get rid of it as it is so glorious.
