Postcards from Wells.

Open the shutters and there it is: the channel winding out through the salt marsh, boats swinging on their moorings, and a wide Norfolk sky above it all.

Something changes when you’re near the sea. Your breathing slows, your shoulders drop, and nobody minds what time it is.

In Wells, the days take their pace from the tide. You can listen to the water coming in at night, watch the light move across the marshes, and take a walk with nowhere in particular to be. There’s space to think here, or not to think at all.

Come and stay with us at Platten’s for a few days, and give yourself time to properly switch off.

Lobster pots stacked along the quay, ropes still damp from the morning, and the fishing boats tied up beside them as they have been for generations.

This is the Wells we see from our windows: the harbour filling and emptying with the tide, gulls on the rooftops, and the light shifting across the marshes from hour to hour. It’s a proper working harbour, and it never quite looks the same twice.

A few of our favourite things about a stay in Wells.

A slow walk along the harbour in the morning, as the tide comes in or goes out and the boats shift on their moorings. Then out past the marshes to the sea, where the sky opens right up. On the way back, a pot of cockles from A & M Frary, eaten on the quay looking out over the water.

Then back to your room above the harbour, with nothing much left to do.

Wells starts right outside the door.

Stay at Platten’s and you’re on the Quay, above the harbour. You wake to the tide moving in the channel and boats heading out, and the town is already going about its morning. Wander past the independent shops and galleries, then walk out by the salt marshes to the beach. Come back as the light softens over the water.

You don’t have to plan much here. Just stay, eat and slow down by the coast.
