Wembury Mill
The National Trust information board near Wembury Mill gives some very useful information about its history. The photograph shows what it may have looked like inside when in working order.
The Curry family were the millers at Wembury Mill until tragedy struck between 1802 and 1803, when three generations in the male line died - James Curry May 6 1802, William Curry June 10 1802, and William Curry February 20 1803. Cause of death is not known but we can only speculate that it may have been some contagious disease.
Son-in-law John Hockaday came from Passage House on the Yealm to run the mill for a time and was succeeded by Richard Stitson. Elisha Gullett, the subject of our previous post, took over in 1820.
Robert Guyver, an ex-Wembury School teacher, is giving a talk to the Devon History Society in May about the Currys and Stitsons should anyone wish to find out more.
