A glorious end to October and a none too shabby start to November. Just a reminder that Wonderful Weymouth is just perfect at any time of year. This week I’ve rowed in a t-shirt and watched folk picnicking on the beach. The swimmers are still swimming and, once the wind dropped, the fishers headed out to sea. We counted 5 boats landing their catch as we strolled around the harbour on Thursday. We’re still welcoming guests, albeit weekends only, and December is proving very popular. I guess people have heard about the Weymouth Christmas buzz. We’ve booked ourselves a mid-week sojourn to the Bath Christmas market - we feel we deserve it after such an extreme season. Yesterday, as we waved a fond farewell to October, we dined on sausages (him, not me) and pan-fried duck liver (me, not him) with crispy bacon, Dad’s cheese and onion pie and buttered savoy cabbage. The cheese and onion pie and savoy cabbage recipes courtesy of Thom Bateman and his new, fabulous book Home Made - so many recipes have caught my eye. Dinner washed down with coffee walnut cake with praline (courtesy of Tom Kerridge). Cake was required after one of us (him, not me) witnessed his beloved Terras lose their first match of the season. Just to prove it’s not all about the breakfast specials here at The View (although it mainly is), I bring you the Full View. One is only fullish. Black pudding always splits the audience. I am, personally, a huge fan. Don’t deny it ‘til you try it.

Friday night, Saturday morning. Friday - pollo ‘nduja frying pan pizza. Saturday - ‘Breakfast Bun’ but not as you know it. Muffin omelette, crispy prosciutto, melting cheese and spicy tomato sauce in a toasted brioche bun. A perfect breakfast special. Perfect fodder for weathering Storm Boelo. Perfect fuel for cheering on The Terras (rather him than me).

Almost 9 years to the day was the day we moved to Wonderful Weymouth. We upped sticks from Heavenly Hertfordshire not really knowing what we were letting ourselves in for. A cozy life was the one we’d been living - good jobs (good salaries), 2 or 3 holidays a year and plenty of restaurant visiting (40 minutes from London by train was a huge temptation). And off we trundled to all the delights that Dorset has to offer. Sunbay was our destination. We waited a few (relaxing) months getting to know the area (and the house) before embarking on a major refurb. Sunbay was just fine but it wasn’t ours. The trials and tribulations of a complete renovation were a distant memory (for us anyway, probably not for our long-suffering neighbours) until I revisited the ‘before’ shots. By May 2018 The View on the terrace was ours and we were ready to welcome guests. The past 9 years have been a rollercoaster, albeit a rather sedate Weymouth one, with Covid 19, The Beast from the East (move over Storm Austen) and economy fluctuations but we’ve survived and our lovely guests keep coming (and keep coming back). Are there things we miss? Yes! The distance from family is hard - no casual pop ins, a visit back has to be planned like a military operation and the aforementioned visits to the Big Smoke are a sacrifice, to mention but 2. Do we have regrets? Absolutely not. We’ll never be rich - this place was an expensive project and, in the true nature of a Georgian property 10m from the sea, continues to cost pennies but Weymouth is a smashing place to live (just ask our guests and read our reviews), there is a real sense of community and the local folk are just fab. There are great places to visit, amazing places to eat and, of course, terrific hostelries for that impromptu tipple. All-in-all we’re very happy and even more happy to share The Pink House with you. Hope you’re weathering the storm. Over and out - we off for an early anniversary celebration (we may have one on the day too).

A Monday treat. Rib eye steak with a mushroom brandy sauce, green beans and a potato and onion rosti. Perfectly perfect.
