Generations of visitors have come and gone, each leaving a little piece of history behind. And at Halloween, we can't help but wonder whether a few of them might still be enjoying that lovely sea view! 👻

Our Favourite Walks: Radipole Nature Reserve

There’s something rather lovely about Weymouth in the autumn, especially when you venture a little further from the seafront.

Just a short wander from The Gresham, Radipole Nature Reserve is one of our favourite places to enjoy some fresh air, a peaceful stroll and a little wildlife spotting.

With winding pathways, golden reedbeds and plenty of feathered residents, it’s a wonderful place to spend an autumn afternoon.

And here’s a little history for you! Did you know Radipole Lake is thought to have once been a Roman port? Over the centuries, silting and changes to the estuary helped transform the landscape into the nature reserve we know today.

It’s just one of the lovely local spots featured in our Our Favourite Places series on the Gresham website, where we share some of the places that make Weymouth so special.

🐦 Something to tweet about in Weymouth!

A few weeks ago, we shared the wonderful marine-themed artwork transforming one of Weymouth’s underpasses.

Well, it would be remiss of us not to share its feathered neighbour, now that it’s complete!

From robins and blue t**s to magpies and birds in flight, the detail and colour in these murals are simply fantastic.

What a wonderful project, transforming two walkways into something really rather special.

We think both tunnels look fabulous and are a lovely addition to Weymouth. A huge well done to everyone involved! 👏

Full credit to the incredibly talented artists Peter Sheridan and Wayne Barker for creating such wonderful artwork and bringing a splash of colour to Weymouth!

Looking across the bay towards the Esplanade, it’s easy to appreciate just how beautiful our historic seafront is.

Have you ever noticed the faces on the buildings in Gloucester Street? 👀

We recently heard a fascinating bit of Weymouth folklore about them.

The story goes that they date back to Weymouth’s royal days, when runners working for the King were sent around town with messages and errands. As some couldn’t read, they were supposedly directed to the right house by the face carved outside it.

Great story, isn’t it?

There’s just one problem… we’re not convinced it’s true.

We’ve been doing a little digging and, so far, the dates don’t quite seem to add up. George III’s famous visits to Weymouth were at the end of the 1700s and beginning of the 1800s, while the buildings with these particular faces appear to have come later.

So where did the story come from? And why are there faces staring out over Gloucester Street?

We’re going to take a closer look.

One of the things we love about being here at The Gresham is just how much history there is within a short walk of our front door, including the occasional mystery.

Does anyone local know this story, or remember being told a different version of it?

A rather impressive visitor appearing off Weymouth today… 👀🏴‍☠️

We spotted Moonfleet making her way across from Portland ahead of this weekend’s Weymouth Pirate Fest.

Not a bad sight from the shoreline on a Friday afternoon!

One of the things we love about the bay is how different it can look depending on where you stand and what the weather is doing.

A lovely little reminder that there’s always another view to find around Weymouth.
