PLEASE CLOSE THE GATES šŸ‘šŸ

Itā€™s a love hate relationship I have with the village sheep! Yes itā€™s lovely they roam freely on the village common, but if they see a chance through an open gate they will be in your garden causing mayhem! And never mind our previous veg, there may even be plants or trees that they shouldnā€™t eat for their own health.

This morning Pete opened the curtains and uttered what no one wants to hear at 7.30am when still in bed ā€œthere are sheep in the back gardenā€ so it was wellies on, and some gently herding out back where they belong. Thankfully it doesnā€™t look like they have eaten too much.

So please remember, if youā€™re visiting us and come through one of the gates, please make sure itā€™s closed again šŸ§”

Picture the scene. Itā€™s Wednesday morning. The first day of the week at the Homestead. The jobs and emails and calls have all mounted up since my last work day, and the kitchen is in full flow prepping for the week ahead.

So naturally, this vision I have had in my head for a while, became the *absolute* priority. Thankfully Rosie our gardener is always totally on board with all my random flower and veg related thoughts, and so, my new favourite bit of the restaurant was born! We hope the dahlias will dry out nicely, but if not, we will try some other flowers!

What do you think? Better than entering invoices on the laptop right?!

Find your people. These are our people. Well, just some of them!! This was the Sunday team today, and together we fed and looked after more Sunday lunchers than ever before šŸ§” which topped off the busiest week we have ever had. We are so unbelievably grateful for each and everyone one of you who chooses to come and dine with us, and at the risk of getting too soppyā€¦ we bloody adore our team. I have never had the pleasure of working with people who make the days so much brighter, who put their heart and soul into it, so much so, we even choose to spend our social time together too šŸ¤£

In a world of disconnect, our goal is to reconnect. To the food we eat, to the conversations we have, to the place we create.

Todayā€¦ almost ever single vegetable and herb was grown right here (everything on the roast beef, everything on the fish main, the salad and herbs on the vegetarian dishā€¦) this is the dream, and we are getting there little be little!

So with tired feet, and a smile on my face, Iā€™m going to eat some leftovers, ā€œtidy upā€ an open bottle of something nice, and flop with my little family šŸ§”

Today, rather than grabbing a piece of toast from home and eating at my desk, I asked the kitchen for my absolute current favourite lunch - fried summerfields cheese dumplings, packed with garden herbs, served with the most flavourful ratatouille sauce, and salad from the garden.

I even went and sat in the private dining room, alone, and properly enjoyed my food, not doing anything else, no scrolling, no scribbling in a notepad.

Personally, dining solo is a bit of a luxury for me, and I will happily do it anywhere! But I know thatā€™s not for everyone. We fairly often will have solo guests here at the Homestead. Usually with a book, or a sketch pad, and donā€™t worry, we donā€™t tuck you away on a less desirable table, and wonā€™t chat your ears off (unless you want to!)

Iā€™ll never forget the first month we opened, we had a table of 1 book inā€¦ and of course, there is always the curiosity of ā€œperhaps they are a food criticā€, so this chap comes in, smartly dressed, orders full Ć  la carte, we are all wondering, is this the MICHELIN inspector?! Untilā€¦ a table of locals from the village arrive, and all greet this guest with a friendly hug and a chat šŸ˜‚

This early days solo diner, who is now a regular, much loved guest, will always be known as the possible Michelin man!!

Beautiful boxes loaded up with fresh veg for the week šŸŒ± growing our own food was such a big part of why we came here, and have stuck to the goal, growing a little more each year, learning a little more each season, and seeing the produce coming in like this just feels so satisfying.

Of course each year, there are new and different challenges. .. we are dubbing this year the Homestead Vs The Flea Beetles. We will be sharing more about this soon on our blog. Anyone else had challenges with them this year?

Remember when instagram was just a grid of nice photos? One at a time? Sometimes I feel like itā€™s a full time job to stay on top of social media. Lately Iā€™ve been finding it harder and harder to find any time. Because life has been throwing some curveballs, all of which I am sure we will navigate, but itā€™s feeling a lot.

We are still here, we are loving the busy days of the restaurant and cottage in Summer, the garden is bountiful, the rain will also help massively!

A little reminder that itā€™s definitely worth booking in advance at the moment, as we are wonderfully supported by you all šŸ§”

Also worth making a note of our next staff holiday when we will be closed: Monday 21st September to Wednesday 30th September inclusive.

Who else absolutely LOVES a village show?!
We have been counting down to this year, the boys hard at work planning their entries, we have been saving the best dahlias, gladioli, herbs, onions, garlic, etc etc for the big day.

Even entry night is a social eventā€¦ catching up with neighbours, starting a little fun fighting talkā€¦ and then the big day comes, and itā€™s music, and sports, and scones, and prizes, and I love it. This was my 31st Goathland Flower & Veg show I think (we moved here when I was 9!) and itā€™s so special now watching my boys experience it all too.

The highlights? Their win in the tug of war, hanging out with friends, and first prize for the onions! Swipe to the end to see the entry I feel we were robbed on!!
