Great photo

Comet NEOWISE framed perfectly through one of the windows of Whitby Abbey.

This was taken during the summer of 2020 when the comet became visible in the night sky and drew photographers out across the country in search of a memorable foreground.

For a few weeks it was one of those rare sights that managed to capture people's imagination, visible to the naked eye and bright enough to be photographed above some of our most iconic landscapes.

Standing amongst the ruins of the abbey in the darkness, it felt like one of those moments where history, landscape and astronomy briefly came together.

A comet that won't return for thousands of years passing above stones that have watched over Whitby for more than thirteen centuries.

Just down there folks, is the opening to the sea where our hero Captain James Cook sailed into Botony Bay; and made his first landing on the continent of Australia 🇦🇺

The actual landing place is just to the right of the long pier!

DYK? Captain Cook was apprenticed by the Walker family of Whitby who built Spyglass 1708 so it’s highly likely he visited our holiday home before he became the World’s greatest navigator

Royal Crescent, Whitby 🖤

Whitby’s Royal Crescent has quite the story behind it.

This elegant row of Victorian terraced homes was built in the 1850s as part of George Hudson’s big plan to create a crescent that could rival Bath. Unfortunately, he lost both his money and reputation before he could finish, so Whitby ended up with only half of what he imagined.

Even so, this historic spot became famous for another reason. In 1890, Bram Stoker stayed in one of these houses and started writing his most famous novel, Dracula. Whitby itself became a major part of the story.

Today, you can still see a blue plaque on one of these impressive houses, showing where a piece of literary history happened.

It’s a lovely part of Whitby’s past, with a bit of gothic drama mixed in. 🧛‍♂️🌊
