York wanted this house. Its tenant said no. 🗝️

In the 1720s, York Corporation tried to reclaim Red House from Sir William Robinson for civic use. He refused to surrender his lease, and the city went on to build the Mansion House instead.

Today, more than 60 antiques dealers share this Duncombe Place townhouse. Have you ever climbed those steps for a browse?

York nearly lost this medieval hall. 🕯️

Behind a modern façade in Coffee Yard, Barley Hall had become a plumber’s workshop and showroom. Its medieval structure was revealed in the 1980s, when the building faced demolition.

It had once been home to William Snawsell, a goldsmith and Lord Mayor of York. Today, the Great Hall is recreated as it might have looked around 1483, with long dining tables beneath those towering timbers.
