This is the photo that nearly stopped this season before it started.

In January I got a call from my mum. We had shut Deer Park for a couple of months of repairs. She had gone in one morning to find a burst pipe in the attic, ceilings collapsed in two bedrooms and the kitchen, utility and breakfast room completely awash.

And we had 8 weeks before the first guest of the season was due to arrive.

However, with a gargantuan effort from the fantastic local builders and tradesmen in the Malton area, and much support from our insurers (Homeprotect take a bow), we not only managed to get the house dry and renovated but I think we made some real improvements.

We've very grateful to all the guests who come to stay, who pay for the insurance premiums, and the builders, and the new carpets. Without your support an accident like this - surprisingly common in old houses - would be very hard to repair.

Does anyone know what this musical instrument might be?

This is the plasterwork on the ceiling of the beautiful drawing room at the front of Deer Park , which was built by craftsmen in the 18th Century so that guests could enjoy tea and views across Scampston Park to the big house.

My family likes to sit in there and drink cocktails when we're feeling posh. If it's a very relaxed evening then we do end up staring at the ceiling and arguing about the music ๐Ÿ˜‰

Let me know in the comments if you can help me win the next round of 'what instrument is that then?'

Did you know North Yorkshire is the waterfall capital of England?

They make the best adventure walks and they're plentiful across the Moors. Here are three absolute bangers you can get to from Deer Park:
๐ŸŒŠ Hayburn Wyke - a waterfall, a cobbled beach and rockpools. 10/10 no notes
๐ŸŒŠ Falling Foss - 30 ft waterfall, swimmable pool (although a scramble to get to it) and a tea room! Perfect
๐ŸŒŠ Mallyan Spout - 60 ft fall at the end of an idyllic scrambly walk through a proper Lord of the Rings gorge. And you can get there on the steam train!

Holiday moments no.2: settling in with your favourite book or boxset.

Just you, a comfy corner and a few hours of relaxation. Maybe a cup of tea or something chilled ๐Ÿฅƒ .

We have a lot of comfy nooks at Deer Park, so take your pick: sofa downstairs, sofa upstairs, window seats with lovely views, hammock with the birds chirping. What will you pick?
