Two different chapters of Athens, in the same frame. In the foreground, New Hotel brings a distinctly contemporary rhythm to Filellinon Street; behind it, the domed silhouette of the Russian Church recalls a much older Athens. Originally built in the Byzantine period and extensively restored in the 19th century, the church retains its distinctive brickwork and Byzantine architectural language.

It is this layering of eras that makes Athens such a fascinating city to explore.

Completed in 1887 to the designs of Danish architect Theophil Hansen, the National Library is one of Athens’ most accomplished expressions of Neoclassicism. Its monumental staircase, Ionic columns, and restrained symmetry draw directly from classical Greek architecture, while the building’s scale gives Panepistimiou Street much of its ceremonial character.

One of the city’s great architectural landmarks, and just a 10-minute walk from New Hotel.
