Every so often, a guest leaves a review that reminds us exactly why we started this journey.

One sentence in particular stayed with us:

“The community of people on the island is what makes it even better.”

When we first imagined what hospitality on Mathraki could become, we weren’t focused on building more rooms or attracting more visitors.

We were focused on creating meaningful connections.

Connections between visitors and nature.

Connections between visitors and local people.

Connections that help a small island remain a living community rather than simply a destination.

Reading that our guests enjoyed the hiking, the breakfasts, the sunsets, the boat adventures, and the local Souvlaki Night is wonderful.

But what means the most is hearing that they felt welcomed, included, and part of island life.

That has always been our vision for Mathraki.

Not tourism that simply passes through.

But experiences that create understanding, friendships, and a lasting appreciation for small island communities.

To everyone who has visited us, supported us, worked alongside us, or shared a meal with us—thank you.

You are helping us build something much bigger than a holiday destination.

You are helping keep a small island community alive.

This week, we are very happy to introduce the first official stewards of our new “Adopt an Olive Tree” program from the Katsouratika olive grove on Mathraki Island.

Michelle & Sander from the Netherlands arrived on Mathraki for the first time as visitors… and left as closely connected friends of the island and our mission here.

By adopting their olive tree, they are now helping support the annual care, preservation, and production of one of Mathraki’s traditional olive groves — trees that have quietly stood here for generations overlooking the Ionian Sea.

As part of the program, they will receive:

• Their own personally identified olive tree
• Steward recognition and registration
• Annual updates and photos from the grove
• 4 liters of extra virgin olive oil from their tree delivered to their home each year
• The opportunity to visit and reconnect with their tree anytime they return to Mathraki

This program is about much more than olive oil.
It is about connection, stewardship, preservation, and creating long-term relationships between people and small island life.

Every year, island residents come together to clean the beaches of Mathraki.

Not because someone tells us to.
Because this place is our home.

What surprises many visitors is that much of the debris found on remote island beaches does not originate here.
Rainwater runoff, rivers, and currents carry plastic and waste from large urban areas across the sea, eventually washing ashore on even the most isolated coastlines.

And yet… year after year… small communities quietly continue the work.

This is part of island life too:
protecting what we love.

Each stewarded tree receives its own numbered tag, identity, and connection to the people who choose to support it.

Καλησπέρα σε όλους,

Τον τελευταίο καιρό γίνεται μια σημαντική προσπάθεια από το κράτος, με τη στήριξη ευρωπαϊκών πόρων, για την ανακαίνιση παλιών και κενών κατοικιών σε όλη την Ελλάδα.

Το πρόγραμμα αυτό δίνει τη δυνατότητα, υπό προϋποθέσεις, να καλυφθεί μεγάλο μέρος του κόστους ανακαίνισης, με στόχο να ξαναζωντανέψουν σπίτια που έχουν μείνει κλειστά για χρόνια.

Σκέφτομαι ιδιαίτερα το Μαθράκι, όπου πολλοί από εμάς έχουμε σπίτια που μένουν ανεκμετάλλευτα — κυρίως λόγω κόστους και απόστασης.

Θα είχε ενδιαφέρον να δούμε αν υπάρχει διάθεση από ιδιοκτήτες (ειδικά όσους βρίσκονται στο εξωτερικό) να εξετάσουν μια τέτοια δυνατότητα.

Αν υπάρξει ενδιαφέρον, μπορούμε να δούμε πώς θα οργανωθεί σωστά και συλλογικά.

Δεν πρόκειται για κάτι οργανωμένο ακόμη — απλά μια πρώτη σκέψη για να καταλάβουμε αν υπάρχει ενδιαφέρον.

Αν κάποιος θα ήθελε να μάθει περισσότερα ή να το συζητήσουμε, μπορεί να μου στείλει ένα μήνυμα.

Ίσως είναι μια ευκαιρία να δώσουμε ξανά ζωή στο νησί μας, με έναν τρόπο ήπιο και ουσιαστικό.
