When the clouds roll in over Crete – that’s when the island shows its soul. 🌿

Not every perfect day needs sunshine. Some of the most memorable moments happen when you leave the beach behind and head inland.

On a grey day, few places are more powerful or deeply moving than Arkadi Monastery.

Just 30 minutes from Rethymno, the scenic road winds through olive groves, cypresses and oak trees before reaching the monastery, high on a fertile plateau at 500 m above sea level.

Built in the 16th century, Arkadi became a centre of learning and craftsmanship. But it was the events of 9 November 1866 that made it a symbol of freedom and sacrifice. During the Cretan uprising against Ottoman rule, those who had taken refuge inside chose resistance over surrender – an act of self-sacrifice that remains deeply rooted in Crete’s history. 🕊️

On the way back, combine your visit with a stop in Margarites, the charming pottery village nearby. Enjoy a coffee, explore the ceramic workshops and take the scenic road home through the hills.

Escape the heat. Step into another world. 🌿

Just 7 km south of Rethymno lies one of Crete’s best kept secrets – the Mili Gorge (Φαράγγι των Μύλων). A stunning green oasis, lush with plants and trees, tucked into the hills above Rethymno.

The gorge leads through a wild, romantic valley, where you walk alongside a year-round stream. Along the way, you’ll discover ancient stone houses, chapels built right into the cliff face, and a restored watermill you can actually visit. Bridges cross the stream, small waterfalls lead into cool pools, and the gorge surprises you at every turn.

At around 4 km, it’s a comfortable hike down into the gorge and back up again – perfect for families and all fitness levels. And at the bottom? The charming little Banana Cantina is waiting for you – ideal for a refreshing stop before heading back up.

At the end of the trail, a taverna serves authentic Cretan cuisine made from local products. The perfect reward after a morning in nature.
