You've probably heard the word konoba while planning a trip to Istria.

But do you know what it actually means?

A konoba is much more than a restaurant. It's the heart of Istrian tradition—a cosy tavern where local food, family recipes, good wine, and centuries-old stories come together.

Often hidden in charming stone villages and historic towns, konobas offer an authentic taste of Istria. Expect homemade pasta, local cheeses, truffles, extra virgin olive oil, Istrian wine, and warm hospitality that makes you feel at home.

For those who love authentic experiences, local food, old stone towns, and discovering the true spirit of a destination, visiting a konoba is a must.

One of our favourite examples is , a renowned konoba just a few minutes from our lodges in Kompanj. It's where we often end a day of exploring the region—with good food, local wine, and conversations that linger long after the meal.

As spring comes to an end, we're feeling grateful for every teacher, guest, climber, yogi, hiker, family, and traveller who spent time with us in Kompanj.

Thank you for the energy, stories, laughter, and friendships you brought to our corner of Istria.

Some familiar faces will return next spring, alongside new experiences and new guests, and we couldn't be more excited for what's ahead.

As the temperatures start rising and summer slowly arrives in Istria, Kotli becomes one of our favorite places to escape to 🌿💧

Only a few minutes from Kompanj by car — or a slightly longer bike ride — it’s the kind of place that instantly cools you down.

Waterfalls, natural stone pools, deep green surroundings, cold clear water, and the quiet atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than planned.

A few years ago, in the small village of Kompanj, there were two forgotten stone ruins.
But when and first saw them, they imagined something more — a place where people could slow down, reconnect with nature, feel inspired, and experience Istria as a true home away from home. 🤍

Years later, that vision continues to grow.

With Stone Lodge III now almost complete and soon ready to welcome both new and returning guests, the circle is slowly becoming whole. Built with the same love for authenticity, natural materials, local tradition, and thoughtful details, every corner carries the soul of Mountain Lodge Istria.

What makes these houses truly special is not only the architecture, but the countless hours of work done by the owners themselves. Ines and Luka wanted every space to preserve the spirit of old Istrian villages while creating a warm and inspiring retreat in nature.

Looking back at where it all started, we feel incredibly proud of the entire process — of every challenge, every handmade detail, every restored stone, and every dream that slowly became reality. Seeing these old ruins transformed into a living, welcoming space filled with warmth and stories is something deeply personal and emotional for them.

More than holiday houses, it is a story of restoration, community, craftsmanship, and belonging.

A remote escape surrounded by forests, cycling trails, medieval hilltop towns, truffle regions, and the peaceful rhythm of inland Istria. 🌿

When we started creating the story of Mountain Lodge Istria, we didn’t just want to build a place to stay.
We wanted to create a space where people could reconnect with nature, slow down, and leave with feelings and memories they would carry long after returning home. 🌿

That’s what makes this part of Istria so special.

Within one day, you can hike through green forest trails and mountain landscapes, walk alongside hidden waterfalls while listening to the whispers of the water, discover historical sites and authentic Istrian culture, relax by the sea, and end the day wandering through the timeless stone streets, like the Old Town of Labin and the Sentonina Trail (one of our favorites 😊 ).
