Villa Vinea was designed by Studio 25.4mm and won the BIG SEE Architecture Award 2025.

The interiors are by Nikàrt, whose products throughout the house received the German Design Award for Excellent Product 2026. These are not details the owners added for marketing purposes but the result of building something properly, on cliffs above Sveta Nedjelja that the owners first saw in 2017 and spent years figuring out how to live on.

The villa has four bedrooms across three levels. The master suite has a freestanding bathtub and a cantilevered terrace shaped like a ship's bow, pointing towards Šćedro. The basement holds a w**e tasting room and the first bedroom, which looks out towards Vis.

The ground floor opens entirely to the sea through floor-to-ceiling glass. There is a solid oak dining table, linen sofas, brass accents and Bang & Olufsen speakers. A private vineyard beside the house. A herb garden on the terrace. The beach is 200 metres away.

This is what happens when people who fell in love with a place build something worthy of it.

The internet is calling it nonnamaxxing. On Hvar, it has always been fjaka.

Fjaka is the Dalmatian word for the particular pleasure of doing nothing, on purpose, without apology.

That could mean a coffee that carries on to cocktails. A lunch that becomes the entire afternoon. An evening walk with no end.

The konobas were built for it. The stone squares were designed around it. The pace of island life here is not a choice you make — it is something the place makes for you, if you let it.

The island has been practicing fjaka for centuries. It does not need a trend to validate it.

Vrboska is one of the most genuinely beautiful small towns on Hvar. There is a narrow sea channel, stone bridges, fishing boats and two historic churches facing each other across the old quarter. Villa Lesina sits between them.

Completed in 2021, the villa spans 440m² across three levels, with four bedrooms designed around colour and light, each with its own en-suite.

The Blue Room opens onto a harbour-facing terrace. The largest bedroom extends into a gym and games space. The Kids Room has its own jacuzzi terrace and table tennis. The kitchen seats 12 people. Every summer, guests ask us which beaches to visit on Hvar. We always give the same answer: the famous ones are famous for a reason, but the ones we love most are the ones that take a little more effort to find.

Veli Dolac, which is unpretentious and gorgeous and almost never crowded. Zečja, where Majda's mother swam as a child and where you still meet locals from the surrounding villages rather than tourists from the boats.

Molo Zaraće, with its stone steps carved into the cliffs and the small church above the shore. Mala Milna, where Dinko's restaurant has a wonderfully retro atmosphere and where a small old-fashioned taxi boat still runs to and from Hvar Town like something from another era.

And Dubovica, which everyone knows but which means something different when you have actually lived there.

This is Hvar as we know it. The beaches that belong to the people who grew up here and that we share with every guest who asks.

Sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s, someone photographed the lavender fields below Japjenica, about two kilometres east of Velo Grablje.

The image ended up on the cover of a booklet made by Hvar emigrants living in New Zealand. It is a handmade document of memory and longing, held together by the people who had left the island and needed something to remind them of what they had left behind.

The plantations in this photograph no longer exist. Devastating fires in 1997 and 2003 destroyed them entirely.

What remains is the village, the association Pjover, a group of young people with family roots in Velo Grablje who have spent years rebuilding the lavender heritage around it and the annual lavender festival that brings the island back to what it once smelled like.

In Dalmatian, dvor means courtyard. The place where people gather, stay awhile and come back to after everything else.

Cottage Dvor is built around one. It is a traditional stone cottage in the village of Dol, spanning 140m² across two floors, with a 400m² courtyard at its centre. There, you’ll find a 36m² pool, covered dining terrace, outdoor kitchen, pool billiard table, six sun loungers and a first-floor terrace with views over Dol's two church towers, one dating to the 15th century.

There are two bedrooms for up to six guests. The nearest beach is a few minutes by car. Hvar Town is twenty minutes away. The village feels centuries older than both.

The owners found it on one of many visits to Hvar and described it as love at first sight. Having seen it, we understand why.

Terra Arhaica is not an experience that only asks you to book. It asks you to participate.

In the village of Vrisnik, inside a 150-year-old Dalmatian stone house, a family has built something that sits well outside the usual tourist itinerary. Visitors step into a working version of island life as it was lived 200 years ago — grinding wheat on a stone mill, pressing grapes, learning how fishermen repaired nets, how figs were dried, how fish was preserved and how bread was baked in a kitchen that has been doing it forever,

The experience includes a tasting of fresh bread, olive oil, w**e and traditional island sweets — paprenjak, hrustula, candied almonds and figs — made from family old recipes.

For couples, there's a private candlelit dinner under 101 candles in a rustic tavern, an old Dalmatian kitchen or a hidden cave, with optional live baroque lute and the possibility of an overnight stay.

Cooking classes, lavender workshops and private tastings are also available by reservation.
