Diocletian – the emperor who shaped Split and Dalmatia
On the Adriatic coast, in the heart of modern-day Split, lies the story of one of the most important Roman emperors – Diocletian.
Diocletian was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 284 to 305 and is considered one of the most significant rulers of the Roman Empire. During a period of political crisis, he introduced major reforms that stabilized the empire and fundamentally changed its system of governance.
He is best known for:
introducing the system of tetrarchy, in which the empire was ruled by four leaders
reorganizing the army, taxation system, and state administration
carrying out the last major persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire
being one of the few emperors to voluntarily abdicate in AD 305
After retiring from political life, he withdrew to his palace in present-day Split – Diocletian's Palace. There he spent the last years of his life, far from politics, devoted to gardening.
According to a famous legend, when he was later urged to return to the throne, he replied that if people could see the cabbage he was growing, they would understand why he refused.
Diocletian was born around AD 244, likely near Salona (modern-day Solin), and his palace in Split is today one of the best-preserved examples of late Roman architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
His legacy still lives on through Split – a city that grew out of his palace and became one of the most important cultural and historical symbols of the Mediterranean.

Dragon's Cave
Dragon's Cave is one of the most remarkable cultural and historical landmarks on the island of Brač. It is located above the village of Murvica on the island's steep southern slopes and can be reached by a scenic hiking trail through vineyards and Mediterranean vegetation.
The cave was used by Glagolitic priests in the 15th century as a hermitage and a place of prayer. It is best known for its unique rock carvings depicting a dragon, angels, the Sun, the Moon, and other Christian and symbolic motifs. The impressive dragon relief gave the cave its name.
Dragon's Cave is a unique combination of nature, art, and spirituality and is considered one of Croatia's most valuable monuments of sacred heritage. Due to the site's fragility, visits are possible only by prior reservation and in the company of an authorized guide.
In addition to its cultural significance, the hike to the cave offers spectacular views of Brač's southern coastline, the vineyards of Murvica, and the nearby islands.

Dol – A Traditional Village on Brač
Dol is one of the most picturesque and best-preserved traditional villages on the island of Brač, located just a few kilometres from Postira. With its stone houses, narrow streets, and authentic island architecture, it is often described as "a village frozen in time."
The village is surrounded by numerous caves and rocky cliffs that once served as shelters. Because of its connection with Christmas traditions, Dol is also known as the "Bethlehem of Brač." It is famous for the unique Dol Cake, a traditional dessert made from walnuts, almonds, chocolate, and aromatic spices, following a recipe that is more than a century old.

Museum of Olive Oil – Škrip
Before visiting the Olive Oil Museum, it is worth learning about Škrip, the oldest settlement on the island of Brač, with a history spanning more than 3,000 years. The village is rich in Illyrian, Roman, and medieval heritage. According to local legend, the Roman mausoleum in Škrip is the burial place of Emperor Diocletian's wife Prisca and his daughter Valeria.
The Olive Oil Museum is housed in a restored olive mill dating back to 1864 and showcases the long tradition of olive growing and olive oil production on Brač. Visitors can see original stone mills, old presses, and traditional tools used to produce olive oil, while learning about the historical production process.
At the end of the tour, guests can enjoy a tasting of extra virgin olive oil and other local Brač products. The museum offers an authentic insight into the island's way of life and one of its most important traditions.

Blaca Hermitage 

Blaca Hermitage is located on the southern side of the island of Brač, between Bol and Milna. It was founded in the 16th century by Poljica Glagolitic priests who fled the Ottomans. From a shelter in a cave, they gradually built a church (1588) and a monastery.

The hermits were successful farmers and traders, known for producing wine and honey. They also engaged in book printing and astronomy, and a famous observatory operated in Blaca. They even owned three merchant sailing ships that sailed the Mediterranean.

The last administrator was Don Nikola Miličević, and after his death in 1963 the monastery was turned into a museum. Today, visitors can see old furniture, a library, collections of clocks and weapons, and valuable astronomical instruments.

Blaca Hermitage can be reached on foot from the direction of Vidova Gora or by boat to Popova Vale, followed by about a 45-minute walk. Due to the demanding access, it is recommended to bring enough water.
