When did the aperitif become part of hotel life?
By the late 19th century, grand hotels were becoming social destinations in their own right. The Savoy’s American Bar opened in London in 1893, turning the pre-dinner drink into part of the hotel ritual, a tradition later captured in Harry Craddock’s legendary 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book.

Did you know Rovinj was once an island?
Until 1763, Rovinj’s old town was completely surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, separated from the mainland by a narrow channel and connected by a bridge. As the town grew, the channel was filled in, transforming the island into the peninsula we know today. Yet its winding stone streets, closely packed houses and centuries-old architecture still preserve the unmistakable character of an island town.

The word comes through French hôtel, a term once used for important urban residences and grand private houses. Its deeper roots are connected to the Latin hospes, meaning both “guest” and “host.” Over time, the meaning shifted from a residence built to receive people to the place of hospitality we know today.
