A Guide to the Charm of Old Zagreb: 5 Must-Visit Locations in the Heart of the City! 🇭🇷✨
Zagreb hides a rich history, and its Upper Town streets tell the most beautiful stories. To experience the true spirit of the past, take a stroll through these five essential landmarks that form the very soul of our capital.
1. St. Mark's Church
One of the most recognizable symbols of Zagreb and Croatia. This picturesque 13th-century church is famous for its vibrant tiled roof, showcasing the historical coat of arms of the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia, and Dalmatia, alongside the emblem of Zagreb.
2. The Zagreb Funicular
The oldest form of organized public transport in Zagreb and the shortest funicular railway in the world used for public transit. Connecting the Lower and Upper Towns, this brief, romantic ride offers a charming journey back in time.
3. Lotrščak Tower
Built in the 13th century to guard the city's southern gate, it was named after the "lotrijaš" (thieves' bell) which rang before the town gates closed. Today, it is best known for the Grič Cannon, which has fired from its window precisely at noon since 1877 to mark the middle of the day.
4. The Stone Gate
One of the best-preserved monuments of old Zagreb and the only remaining gate of the ancient defense system. Beneath its arch lies a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Stone Gate, the city's patron saint, whose painting miraculously survived a devastating fire in 1731 completely untouched.
5. Tkalčićeva Street
Once a creek named Medveščak that separated the historic hills of Gradec and Kaptol, today it is the beating heart of Zagreb's social scene. This vibrant, colorful street filled with charming cafes, restaurants, and historical details is the ideal spot to unwind and soak up the city's energy.
