In the early 20th century, German military doctor and amateur photographer Gregor Krause (1883-1959) arrived on the island of Bali. Fascinated by the island’s rich cultural heritage, Krause dedicated his stay to documenting the daily life, spirituality, and customs of its people with profound artistic and ethnographic sensitivity.
The result of his immersion was Bali: Volk, Land, Tänze, Feste, Tempel (People, Land, Dances, Festivals, Temples). Originally published in 1920, this landmark work stands today as one of the most significant and rigorous visual archives of pre-modern Balinese society.
