Tandjung Sari opened in 1962 as a four bungalow extension to the family home of Wija Wawo-Runtu, set in lush gardens on the Sanur beachfront. Today Tandjung Sari has 29 bungalows, evolved from traditional Balinese architecture, construction techniques and materials.

In Bali, the ocean, known as Segara, is not just a body of water; it represents a vital spiritual, cultural, and physical force of life. It is seen as both a sacred purifier and a realm inhabited by demons, reinforcing the island’s cosmological beliefs and significantly influencing daily life.

The deep connection between the Balinese people and the sea is reflected in several key traditions, including:

1. Aturan Pakelem: This ceremony takes place during the temple’s piodalan and is a sacred ritual aimed at restoring the balance of the universe (Buana Agung) and seeking safety. During Pakelem, offerings are traditionally floated in important natural locations, such as the open ocean, lakes, or volcanic craters.

2. Melasti: This annual ceremony occurs before Nyepi, where communities participate in a procession to the ocean while carrying sacred temple heirlooms and effigies. This ritual highlights the ocean’s role as a powerful cleanser, restoring harmony to the island.
