Earlier this week, Mutia, our marine biologist, came across an unexpected sight during her morning island patrol. More than 100 turtle hatchlings were emerging from the sand on Deadman’s Beach and beginning their journey to the sea… from a nest we hadn’t even known was there.
Moments like these are a reminder of nature’s remarkable resilience. Yet they also highlight why conservation remains so important. While our team clears the beaches each day, the tide continues to bring in plastic from far beyond our shores. As the final photo shows, one tiny hatchling’s first encounter with the world was a piece of discarded plastic. Thankfully, Mutia was there to untangle it and help it continue its journey.
With 7 nests on Cempedak so far this year we’re in for a record breaking year of hatchlings.. and it’s only June! 🐢
