Just a short speedboat ride from the east coast of Bintan, Indonesia. It will be an indulgent escape just a few hours away from Singapore. Twenty beautifully crafted bamboo villas will feature spiral staircases leading to spacious bedrooms, with private decks and plunge pools. A bar built into the natural rocks will provide the perfect spot for sundowners with views across the ocean. Secluded beaches, stunning granite rock formations and secret bays await discovery. Cempedak Island will be the second Private Island from the team behind Nikoi Island.

We're excited to welcome F. Jordan Carnice to the island tomorrow, as our 5th resident for the Tulisan Nusantara writer's program.

Jordan is a writer, visual artist, and cultural worker from Tagbilaran City, Bohol, currently based in Dumaguete — a UNESCO Creative City of Literature. His poetry engages questions of selfhood, community, and reverence for the natural world, and he was named Poet of the Year at the Nick Joaquin Literary Awards in 2023, 2024, and 2026—a first three-peat win in the award’s history.

This November, we’re heading back underwater! From 19–22 Nov 2026, a scientific dive expedition returns to the East Bintan Marine Protected Area to look for fish species found nowhere else on Earth, picking up where April’s expedition left off.

The expedition is being run by Nesha Ichida of Thrive Conservation, Mark Erdmann, and Gerald Allen — a rare chance to spend three days in the water with three of the most experienced marine biologists working in the Indo-Pacific.

Tulisan Nusantara is a Writers' Residency Programme on Cempedak Island.

Each year, published writers from across the region are invited to spend time on the island, drawing inspiration from the natural world and the stories of the Riau Islands.

During their stay, residents explore ideas connected to place, identity, and culture. Guests may spot them working in quiet corners of the island, or on occasion, join an open reading or informal discussion. Each residency leaves behind a piece of writing, which will be gathered into an anthology over time.
