Diving for the first time in two years and taking her first underwater images within 3 days, Isabella Tabacchi dives into Raja Ampat 📸

Isabella's first couple of days in Raja Ampat were spent getting her buoyancy right before bringing a camera underwater. And when she did, a whole new world of photography opened up for her. Trying different wide-angle lens setups, Isabella found many clownfish to photograph, endless rows of acropora coral and explored the mangroves for some over and under shots.

As an award-winning landscape photographer, Isabella learned quickly and offered her creative insights to shed a new light on underwater photography. Stay tuned to see her first images from paradise.

Did you know that the broadclub cuttlefish uses motion camouflage to hunt?

Although this display of changing colors and patterns make them seem more visible to our human eyes, it is actually what makes cuttlefish harder to see from their prey's point of view -- crabs.

So the next time you see a broadclub cuttlefish displaying these patterns, perhaps they're trying to camouflage themselves from our watchful eyes.

What happens when you bring an award-winning landscape photographer underwater?

Inspired by her then-student, Don Silcock, Isabella Tabacchi spent a few weeks with us diving and learning the differences between photographing on land and underwater. With Don's help, she explored the thriving reefs of Raja Ampat, getting inspired to bring her vision to life.

Congratulations to our newest dive guides 🤙🏼

Partnering and working with the local communities around us has always been at the core of what we do. When Max first came here, he had the help of the local Papuans to navigate the currents and winds of the Dampier Strait, exploring the dive sites we know today. Over 30 years ago, he trained the first dive guides in the region.

This still stands with us today as we continue to invest in the local people, giving them the opportunities to become dive guides. For three months we trained a new team from Open Water all the way to their Rescue Diver certification. Some of them came from the remote islands of West Waigeo, leaving behind friends and family to learn to dive -- being the first in their village to learn how to breathe underwater.

It's been a month since they've officially started working as Junior Dive Guides and we can't wait to see more of what they will achieve ✨
