WTFossil & Head The Ball Update......
WTFossil has been recently ( hands on ) examined by a Coroner who says it is mammalian, but definitely not homo sapien, Hominid a possibility but most likely Wolf !
Head The Ball is in a bit of hot water with the following initial analysis :
My initial assessment is that you have a fossil coral, from the Carboniferous Period, and it is most likely a species of Lithostrotion, possibly a Lithostrotion decepiens. If you look carefully at the ‘ head’ part, you can see the coral structures therein. During the Carboniferous, ‘Ireland’ was on the equator and we basked in warm tropical seas.
The material around the fossil is some type of limestone. As to why the main part is subspherical I do not know, except to note that when erosion acts on a rock/fossil that, overall, has similar properties in all directions (i.e., composition, texture, structure, etc) it will tend to produce spherical shapes. The coral, in this instance, would be of this category.
Still a 350 Million year old fossil won’t be a bad result !
So......a trip to Dublin with WTFossil, Head the Ball and Bear Claw may be the only option for a definitive answer
