The Line Templeport, Golden Way is a rural walk in west rural Cavan. A series of Golden Way walks have being promoted by the Heritage Office in Cavan.

This walk is part of a recent project coordinated by the Heritage Office and supported by the Heritage Council and Creative Ireland.

Two artists have worked with Bawnboy Heritage Group to facilitate the process of identifying the heritage along their golden way; what makes it unique and special.

Through this process the artists have assisted the group to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. , , , ,

Step onto the wild limestone landscape of Cavan Burren Park and follow the winding Green Trail into a world where myth and prehistory collide. Nestled among the rocks, you’ll uncover the mysterious Tullygobban Wedge Tomb — a silent stone structure that has watched over this land for thousands of years.

Its name comes from its striking wedge shape, narrowing as it stretches from front to back, as if purposefully pointing toward the past. These wedge tombs are the most common of Ireland’s megalithic monuments, built during the fascinating Chalcolithic period — a time of transformation, when early communities first began crafting tools and weapons from copper.

But this place is more than ancient stone. Legend whispers that Tullygobban takes its name from Gobán Saor, the mythical builder said to possess extraordinary skill and cunning. As you stand beside the tomb, it’s easy to imagine his hand shaping the land, blurring the line between history and folklore.

Here, every step along the Green Trail feels like a journey through time — where rugged beauty, ancient engineering, and enduring legend meet.

"Had an amazing time staying at the keepers arms & walking in the Cavan Burren. The bar is very comfy with affordable prices. The rooms are very spacious and implacably tidy and clean. Kudos for Peadar from the bar. He was a real craic!"

At Tullydermot Falls, the river tells a story of youth, energy, and constant change. Unlike older rivers that drift lazily across wide, flat beds, this is a river in its prime—fast, restless, and full of life. Here in its upper reaches, it tumbles dramatically over الصخور, carving out a landscape defined by waterfalls and rushing rapids.
Tullydermot Waterfalls
The falls themselves are shaped by a quiet battle beneath the surface. Layers of hard sandstone and softer shale lie stacked beneath the water. As the river surges onward, it eats away at the softer rock, gradually undercutting the stronger layers above. Over time, this relentless force sculpts the striking cascade you see today—a snapshot of geology in motion.

But Tullydermot is more than just a dramatic scene. Its waters are alive with small brown trout, darting through the currents, making it a hidden gem for anglers seeking a rewarding catch.

Just across the road, an old red barn stands as a gateway to adventure. Beyond it lies an unmaintained trail, winding into the hills—a path less traveled, perfect for those who crave a wilder, more rugged journey. For hill walkers, it offers not just a route, but an experience: raw, untamed, and breathtaking at every turn.
