Slaney Harriers Crowned Premier Minor Champions After Emphatic Victory

Slaney Harriers produced a magnificent display of attacking football to claim the 2026 OMNIPRO Minor Football Premier Division Championship title, overcoming Ballyhogue in emphatic fashion at Chadwicks Wexford Park on Friday evening.

The amalgamation of HWH Bunclody and Marshalstown delivered a performance full of determination, quality and clinical finishing, eventually running out convincing winners on a scoreline of 4-16 to 1-07.

The opening half was a competitive affair, with Ballyhogue battling hard to establish a foothold in proceedings. However, Slaney Harriers demonstrated greater fluency in attack with Ballyhogue spurning their attacking opportunities through poor handling and misplaced passed at crucial tikes. The fact they were playing with a strong first half wind didn't benefit them to the extent it should have and to be fair to Slaney Harriers this was largely due to an outstanding work rate and a solid defensive platform.

Our first goal arrived when Mossy Tyrell got a crucial hand in to intercept a Ballyhogue pass when a goal looks imminent, Slaney Harriers swept up thhe field and Noah Byrne who was a thorn in the side of the Ballyhogue defence all night found Brian Ivers to finish to the net .

Slaney Harriers controlled the tempo of the game from there on with Ivers adding a second goal with neat work from from Noah Byrne and Sam Sheehan. Ballyhogue had opportunities though placed balls to narrow the gap coming to half time but they failed to take their chances and Slaney Harriers took a 5 point lead into the interval, leading 2-02 to 0-03.

The second half started with a bang, Ballyhogue scored a goal almost immediately on the resumption Nathan Dolye finishing to the net, Andrew Brown picked the ball from the net, pinged his kickout 60 yards wind assisted to Brian Ivers chest who had Mick Kehoe running off his shoulder at pace, he carried the ball to the 21 before his shot was saved by Ballyhogue net minder Luke Carr for Kehoe to finish the rebound to the net with his fist.

Slaney Harriers then began to move thorough the gears , producing an outstanding display of attacking football that Ballyhogue simply couldn't contain.

The Harriers' forward division was in devastating form, with Brian Ivers scoring 3 2 pointers in short order 2 placed balls and a sweet effort from the outside of the boot. Mick Kehoe added a second goal when a long ball from Ivers found Kehoe who turned his man to finish to the net. Ivers was conducting the orchestra at this stage, his range and accuracy of passing combined with the constant moving of the forward unit ran an honest Ballyhogue outfit ragged. Ivers would add another 2 pointer and Conor Kehoe would do the same as Slaney Harriers turned the screw. The Harriers' ability to spread the scoring burden across several players proved particularly impressive with all of their 6 starting forwards registering scores.

Ballyhogue deserve credit for continuing to battle throughout, eventually registering a goal of their own, but the evening belonged firmly to Slaney Harriers.

By the final whistle, the Harriers had amassed an impressive 4-16, sparking celebrations among players, management and supporters.

For the young footballers representing HWH Bunclody and Marshalstown and their mentors Bartley Regan Jeremy McGrath and Brian Davis, this was a richly deserved reward for their commitment and hard work throughout the campaign.

The Premier Division title represents another significant achievement for the Slaney Harriers amalgamation which now comes to an end having proved a very successful union and provides further evidence of the exciting young footballing talent emerging from both clubs.

A wonderful achievement for everyone involved and a night to remember at Wexford Park!

Bunclody’s Never-Say-Die Spirit Delivers Another Title After Epic Battle with Oilgate

Bunclody's season reached another high point as the U16 footballers captured the Division 1 Shield title following a thrilling 4-15 to 5-6 victory over a determined Oilgate side. Having already secured league football and hurling honours earlier in the year, Bunclody once again demonstrated the resilience, character and unwavering belief that have become the hallmarks of this talented group.

From the outset, Bunclody faced a stern challenge. Noah Byrne opened the scoring, but Oilgate quickly gained momentum and struck for a series of goals that put Bunclody firmly on the back foot. Despite not producing their best football in the opening half, Bunclody refused to let the contest get away from them. Crucial scores from Jerome Kelly, Noah Byrne and Mike Sheehan kept them within touching distance while Oilgate looked threatening whenever they attacked.

At the other end, replacement goalkeeper Justin Murphy, deputising admirably for the injured Charlie Kavanagh, produced an outstanding save when another Oilgate goal seemed inevitable. In front of him, defenders Donnchadh Lennon, Liam Coleman and captain Tommy Moynihan repeatedly threw themselves into the battle to prevent the game slipping beyond reach. Their determination epitomised the team's refusal to surrender despite facing a significant deficit.

Bunclody's half-back and half-forward lines were forced into immense defensive work against bigger and faster opponents. A beautifully constructed move from deep in defence eventually found Jerome Kelly in space, and he calmly converted to lift spirits among the Bunclody support. Then, on the stroke of half-time, came a pivotal moment. Mike Sheehan finished another excellent team move with a goal that injected fresh belief into Bunclody's challenge and ensured they entered the interval with momentum firmly on their side.

The second half began with further adversity. Oilgate extended their lead once more and later struck another goal to move six points clear. Yet if one theme has defined this Bunclody team all season, it is their refusal to accept defeat. Instead of folding, they produced a defensive response that laid the foundation for a remarkable comeback. Liam Coleman intercepted twice in quick succession, Patrick Kenny won crucial possession, and Donnchadh Lennon produced a vital last-ditch tackle that led to another important save.

A yellow card for captain Tommy Moynihan only reinforced the team's determination. Inspired by their skipper's leadership, Bunclody raised both their intensity and belief. Noah Byrne and Mike Sheehan drove the turnaround in attack, while the tireless running of Cathal Pender created opportunities across the forward line. Scores from Noah Byrne and an excellent tight-angle effort from Ryan Murphy reduced the deficit before Mike Sheehan, after a flowing passing move involving Noah Byrne, Jerome Kelly and Mike Murphy, crashed home a goal that his outstanding work rate fully deserved.

By now Bunclody were surging. Mike Sheehan's movement and creativity were creating problems all over the field, bringing teammates into the game and energising the entire attack. Jamie Norris quickly bounced back from an earlier missed opportunity by finding the net. Mike Murphy followed with vital scores, while Jamie Norris added further points. Noah Byrne continued to orchestrate the attack, finishing with an impressive five-point haul while also providing the spark behind many of Bunclody's best moves.

Just as impressive was the work being done away from the scoreboard. Bunclody's full-back line stood firm under pressure, winning key individual battles throughout the closing stages. Captain Tommy Moynihan produced a particularly influential spell, fielding four consecutive Oilgate kick-outs to maintain momentum. Midfield and wing players Ed Dunbar and Tony Brophy repeatedly made selfless recovery runs to halt dangerous attacks and keep Bunclody in control.

Fresh energy arrived from the bench, with Johnny Connors and Troy Farrell making valuable contributions. Johnny Connors in particular settled immediately into the pace of the contest, helping win possession high up the field and creating scoring opportunities at a critical stage of the game.

Although Oilgate managed one final goal to restore hope, Bunclody's spirit remained unbroken. Late points from Jamie Norris and an excellent solo score from Rylee Murphy helped secure victory, while fittingly Mike Sheehan had the final say of the evening, ending with a superb tally of 2-3 and capping a truly influential performance.

Special recognition is also due to injured squad members Charlie Kavanagh and Matthew Pender, who remained fully committed to the group throughout their recovery periods, while Mick Connors and Matthew Whiting also played an important role in supporting the team's success during the year.

This victory was about far more than silverware. It was another demonstration of the character, unity and never-say-die attitude that define this remarkable Bunclody squad. Time and again they faced setbacks, but time and again they found a response. Their refusal to yield, combined with outstanding teamwork and leadership throughout the field, ultimately proved decisive.

Having already secured football league and hurling honours earlier in the season, Bunclody can now look forward with confidence as they pursue yet another trophy and seek to add the Division 2 Shield hurling to an already memorable year.

All roads lead to Chadwicks Wexford Park as Slaney Harriers, the amalgamation of HWH Bunclody and Marshalstown, prepare to take on Ballyhogue in the U18 Premier Division County Final.

There is a familiar feel to this encounter, with many of these players having met in a memorable juvenile county final just two years ago. On that occasion, Slaney Harriers emerged victorious against the same opposition on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-06.

Two years on, both sides meet again with another county title on the line. Slaney Harriers will be hoping to repeat that success, while Ballyhogue will be determined to turn the tables.

Reaching another county final is a tremendous achievement for this talented group and a testament to the commitment of the players and management from both clubs.

With plenty of familiarity between the sides and county honours at stake, all the ingredients are there for another cracking contest.

We encourage all supporters to make the journey to Wexford Park, wear their colours proudly and get behind this talented group of young footballers as they aim to bring another county title home.
