MusicConnects’ autumn/winter season ‘In Conversation’ continues this November with a new programme – ‘One sea, two shores’. ConTempo Quartet, MusicConnects Ensemble-in-Residence, explores the heat of the Spanish string quartet repertoire, alongside lesser known Maltese flavours. Works include Joaquín Turina’s Oracion del Torero, the famous piece depicting a bull fighter’s prayer before entering the ring, Josepth Vella’s 3 Danze Antiche con Preludio reimagining Baroque dance forms through a contemporary Maltese lens, and Karl Fiorini’s lively Maltese Qu**ky. The programme is rounded out with Irish composer Rhona Clarke’s second string quartet Pas de Quatre, composed for ConTempo Quartet in 2009.
One sea, two shores sees its first performance as part of ConTempo Countywide, a series bringing the MusicConnects programmes to communities across Galway County, connecting people to the joy of chamber music wherever they are. ConTempo Quartet performs at the Something in the Water Festival in Headford, with a special introduction from composer Rhona Clarke.
